Staff Mechanical Hardware Engineer - Displays

Job DescriptionWe are seeking a high-performing Staff Mechanical Design Engineer interested in leading the in-house development of GM display mechanical design. You will be responsible for the mechanical design, development, analysis and review of Display packaging, A-surface development along with B-side integration (clips, screw bosses, etc.) for our next generation SDV (Software Defined Vehicle) architecture. You will be depended upon to build strong partnerships with internal and external customers.What You’ll do:Execute mechanical design of displays per program timing, leading tosuccessful launch of the product.Using GM Studio theme (i.e., A-surface) as the guide, design mechanical components including castings, injection moldings, stampings, seals, PCBA mounts, adhesives, connector interface and fastening, etc.Perform design calculations, GD&T and tolerance stacks.Perform optimum material selection for specific applications within the display and for their interface to the vehicle (IP & Console, for example), using GM best practices and Materials Engineering as a partner in this selection.Create 3D CAD, 2D CAD & lead CAD reviews with stakeholders.Develop analysis and test plan for new design, perform proof of concept tests and analysis.Lead prototyping and testing, analyze test data, and make necessaryadjustments to mechanical designs.Work with electrical engineers and PCBA designers to integrate components into electro-mechanical systems.Support root cause analysis and solution development based on virtual and/or physical test results.Build partnerships with functional peers internally within GM andexternally at Tier 1 suppliers to align on display design per development cycles.Develop virtualization technologies that help accelerate and de-riskproduct development.Communicate design progress and risks to stakeholders and customers.Drive mechanical design strategy for the enterprise.Solid organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projectssimultaneously.Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent engineering degree10+ years of engineering experience in design and development of styled electronics and/or appearance grade injection molding, plating and casting.Exceptional collaboration and teamwork skills; demonstrated ability for working across functional and organizational boundaries.Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling (NX and Teamcenter are the tools required to execute GM projects), 2D drawings, tolerance analysis, design for manufacturability, and assembly.Strong analytical skills and engineering fundamentals in solid mechanics, material science, heat transfer, mechanism design, and manufacturing.Hands-on experience engaging with display manufacturers.What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Skills)Master’s degree/PhD in Mechanical / Industrial EngineeringMechanical design of plastics and structural components, PCBA integration with mechanical components, computers, or automotive electronicsStrong understanding of thermal solutions and their application.Knowledge of vibrational and structural analysisExperience with ASME Y14.5-2009 dimensioning & tolerancingCompensation: The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position, as well as geography of the selected candidate. • The salary range for this role is (159,400 - 245,000).
