Assistant United States Attorney (Civil)

Overview The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas is among the largest and busiest in the nation, spanning 43 counties and 44,000 square miles and representing 8.3 million people from the Houston area to the Mexico border. Employment with the U.S. Attorney's Office is a unique, challenging, and rewarding experience for the highly motivated attorney. This position is located in Laredo, Brownsville, Corpus Christi or McAllen, Texas. Responsibilities Assist in the Civil Division on land condemnation matters and related cases involving the border with Mexico, as well as immigration enforcement matters, issuing warrants, defending asylum and passport cases, and general civil litigation matters. Work on a broad range of cases involving significant, complex issues on behalf of the United States in federal court; contribute to a fast-paced, challenging, and varied caseload with frequent courtroom appearances. Responsibilities may increase and civil assignments may become more complex as training and experience progress. Requirements You must be a United States Citizen or National. Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication (fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing). Continued employment is subject to a favorable background investigation. If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, you must certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System, or are exempt from registration. J.D. degree and active member of the bar in any U.S. jurisdiction required. Must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof. Qualifications Required: J.D. degree, active bar membership, and at least 1 year of post-J.D. legal or related experience. United States citizenship is required. Preferred: Strong academic credentials, excellent legal research and writing skills, high-volume courtroom experience, and strong organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work in a professional team environment with AUSAs, support staff, and investigative agencies. Proficiency in computer use, legal research, and drafting. Salary and Benefits Salary information: The range of pay for this position (including locality pay) is from $63,163 to $195,100. The Department of Justice offers a comprehensive benefits package including paid vacation; sick leave; holidays; life insurance; health benefits; and participation in the Federal Employees Retirement System. Relocation expenses will not be authorized. Additional information Location: Laredo, Brownsville, Corpus Christi or McAllen, TX. Travel: 1 to 5 nights per month on average.
