MAIN FUNCTION:

Performs nursing care for the patient in the immediate post operative/post anesthesia period, assessing and documenting patient’s status upon arrival in the post anesthesia care unit. Provides nursing care to meet patient needs related to surgical condition and type of anesthesia administered, monitoring patient and informing surgeon or anesthetist of observed complications.

DUTIES:

• Effectively organizes time, equipment, supplies, and personnel for management of the recovery room
• Organizes nursing activities efficiently, considering staff abilities when delegating activities
• Uses equipment effectively by anticipating patient needs and providing appropriate care
• Confirms that proper techniques and procedures are used according to accepted standards of practice
• Assists in managing inventory of supplies, drugs, and equipment to maintain availability and stock levels in the postoperative area
• Maintains order and cleanliness of postoperative area
• Performs safe and individualized nursing care for the patient in the immediate postoperative/post anesthesia period
• Use standards of practice and demonstrates appropriate assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation through-out the post anesthesia period.
• Documents post anesthesia care in the recovery room during the patient’s recovery from anesthesia/sedation according to approved policies and procedures
• Documentation should reflect patient status through-out recovery period
• Documentation should reflect nursing actions, interventions and patient’s response and outcomes
• Assesses, provides meds accordingly and re-evaluates pain levels.
• Provides nursing care to meet patient needs related to surgical condition and type of anesthesia administered
• Collaborates with other health care team members to assure the patient’s well-being and safety.
• Assesses and provides intervention for specific patient population (i.e., infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric)
• Demonstrates necessary skill and knowledge to provide “Age-Specific” care, according to TOPS competency standards.
• Understand safety considerations for administering medications i.e., “look alike-sound alike drugs; concentration of drugs, abbreviations, proper labeling of drugs
• Understands and demonstrates “two Identifiers” when performing any treatment or care for the patient.
• Monitors patients and informs surgeon or anesthesia of observed complications
• Performs thorough postoperative patient assessment prior to discharge of the patient
• Assists in assessing the physical and emotional status of the patient in preparation for discharge
• Develops a plan of care for the patient based on the assessment data
• Reviews postoperative instructions and prescriptions from the surgeon with patient and significant other and documents in the patient’s medical record
• Informs patient and family about appropriate care and procedure to follow upon returning home
• Determines that patient and significant other understand conditions that require immediate care/method to obtain immediate care
• Provides comfort and reassurance to the patient and promotes privacy and dignity
• Performs other tasks and duties as assigned in an efficient, effective and cost conscious manner, complying with all USPI’s policies, procedures and regulations

Required Skills Required Experience

  Required

• Graduate of accredited school of nursing
• RN with active license in appropriate state
• BCLS; ACLS, PALS certifications
• Evidence of leadership qualities
• Strong ethical and moral character references
• Language skills adequate for high-level written, interpersonal and telephone communication in American English

• Computer literacy
