Physician - Psychiatrist

SUMMARY This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit the EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. QUALIFICATIONS BASIC REQUIREMENTS United States citizenship. Non‑citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens cannot be recruited in accordance with VA policy. Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine. Degree obtained from a VA approved school for the year the course of study was completed. Current, full, and unrestricted medical or surgical license in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia. Residency training completed in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification. Add details for specific residencies as outlined in the qualification standard. For physicians who are presently enrolled in an accredited residency, appointment is allowed as a "Physician Resident Provider" (PRP) under specified conditions. PRPs must be fully licensed physicians, may only be appointed on an intermittent basis, and are not considered independent practitioners. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical actions including pushing, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers and both hands, walking, standing, and kneeling for 3–5 hours to 2 hours, respectively. Rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Near vision correctable to 13–16 inches to Jaeger 1–4. Far vision correctable to 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other. Depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Hearing aid permitted. RESPONSIBILITIES Remote work eligibility, with potential office assignment at a local VA facility, CBOC, or federal agency. Provide general clinical psychiatric services to veterans, including crisis and walk‑in services. Conduct diagnostic evaluations, psychiatric consults, treatment planning, and medication management. Provide direct clinical supervision of multidisciplinary staff as appropriate and complete general notes and encounters within 24 hours. Complete Talent Management Systems (TMS) trainings and ongoing professional practice examination (OPPE) assessments for other providers by assigned due dates. Offer clinical coverage for other medical providers in behavioral health. Deliver clinical services to veterans in various formats (face‑to‑face, CVT, VVC) as appropriate. Possess an administrative and practical understanding of mental health treatment settings and clinical knowledge as a psychiatrist. Research, assemble, compile information and data, evaluate results against standards, and recommend corrective action. Treat common diagnoses such as anxiety disorders, PTSD, major depression, mood disorders, substance use disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, other serious mental illnesses, dementia, and traumatic brain injury‑related disorders. Serve a population of male and female veterans from all military eras. Provide outpatient treatment while also offering consultation services to inpatients, community living centers, residential rehabilitation treatment program residents, and participants in mental health intensive case management, PTSD clinical team, substance use, and homeless programs. Exercise judgment in selecting or adapting standard clinical theories, techniques, and practices, and develop new techniques for specialized problems or clinical populations. Work schedule Monday‑Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, with potential early‑morning, evening, or weekend duties and participation in on‑call rotation as required.
