Speech-Language Pathologist
Screens and assesses students for possible communication disorders as identified through Rule 51. Designs, implements, and collects documentation on the delivery of services to each identified student. Works collaboratively with students, parents, building staff, and other Individual Education Program team members to provide and implement IEP services to enhance a student's progress in the general curriculum/environment.
Major Responsibilities & Duties:
- Provides evaluation and service plans for students with communication disorders.
- Identifies and evaluates communication disorders; develops and implements individualized plans for students to improve speech and language skills.
- Maintains accurate and complete records as required by laws, policies, and regulations.
- Maintains positive professional communications with parents, guardians, administration, and colleagues regarding progress and concerns.
- Directs therapy sessions including speech/language articulation, voice and fluency therapy.
- Communicates and collaborates with colleagues and monitors student progress.
- Establishes and maintains appropriate using the Boys Town Social Skill Model for a productive learning environment.
- Serves as a resource to school staff members in the area of speech and language improvement.
- Develops and uses student's Individualized Educational Plans with each student in caseload.
- Provides information, support, and counseling to parents and families when appropriate.
- Performs other related tasks as assigned by the principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
- Maintain compliance on all special education procedures, timelines, and documents such as Individual Education Program (IEP), progress reporting, parent notification, consents, evaluation process, etc.
- Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record keeping and lesson planning and student progress toward IEP goals as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
- Working with and understanding a diverse student population.
- Promotes an environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
- Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
- Evidence of the willingness and the ability to comply with the standards with ethical and professional performance established by district policy as well as the State Board of Education.
- Works collaboratively to achieve the overall purpose of the program and support the District's vision, aims and goals.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of state policies, statutes, and procedures on education and regulations of Nebraska.
- Ability to diagnose the nature and extent of impairment.
- Ability to modify or adapt general education curriculum.
- Ability to maintain a high level of professional competence via in-service education, self-selected professional education, and curriculum development.
- Ability to demonstrate a commitment to the use of a behavioral approach to motivate student learning.
- Ability to demonstrate concern and respect for individual students.
Required Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology required.
- Previous experience administering and interpreting a wide range of diagnostic test materials and remedy services required.
- Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech Hearing Association required.
- Current Nebraska Teaching Certificate with an endorsement in Speech-Language Pathology required.
Physical Requirements, Equipment Usage, Work Environment:
- Extended periods of time in a classroom environment or at a keyboard, workstation, or desk; reasonably expected to have and maintain sufficient strength, agility, and endurance to perform during stressful (physical, mental and emotional) situations encountered on the job without compromising their health and well-being or that of their fellow employees, youth, or families. Work is typically in a normal educational school administrative environment but may be performed in a variety of environments ranging from highly stressful and potentially aggressive to casual and leisurely, in both indoor and outdoor settings. While performing the duties of this job, may be subject to outside weather conditions occasionally. Includes constant interruptions, inappropriate behaviors, and the potential for verbal and physical threats from youth.
