Job Summary


The primary responsibility of a college-preparatory high school science teacher is to engage and challenge students through rigorous, standards-aligned instruction that builds strong scientific understanding, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills essential for college success and STEM pathways. The teacher designs and delivers engaging, inquiry-driven lessons according to the Arizona Academic Standards for Science in areas such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth/Space Science; assesses student learning through multiple measures; and uses data to refine instruction and provide timely support or enrichment.

Other responsibilities include fostering a structured, safe, and inclusive classroom and laboratory environment; integrating literacy, math, and technology into science instruction; and explicitly teaching scientific practices such as investigation, analysis, experimentation, and evidence-based reasoning. The teacher works collaboratively with colleagues, communicates clearly with students and families about academic progress, and upholds high professional, ethical, and instructional standards in support of the school's college-ready mission.

Essential Functions


40%: Plan and deliver rigorous science instruction aligned to the Arizona Academic Standards for Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth/Space Science as applicable); challenge students through rigorous, standards-aligned instruction that builds strong scientific understanding, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills essential for college success and STEM pathways. Implement inquiry-based, phenomenon-driven instruction that emphasizes scientific practices, crosscutting concepts, and real-world application. Differentiate instruction to support students with varied learning needs, including English Learners and students with disabilities, consistent with Arizona requirements.

25%: Design and administer formative and summative assessments aligned to Arizona standards and local benchmarks. Analyze student data to guide instructional adjustments and targeted interventions. Maintain accurate grades and assessment records in compliance with school and state reporting expectations. Participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), data reviews, and collaborative planning. Contribute to curriculum alignment, instructional improvement, and schoolwide continuous improvement efforts (e.g., Cognia-aligned practices). Engage in professional development to maintain certification and strengthen instructional practice.

15%: Plan, supervise, and assess laboratory investigations that meet course and college-readiness expectations. Enforce laboratory safety protocols, including proper handling, storage, and disposal of materials in accordance with district/charter and state guidelines. Maintain lab equipment, inventory, and documentation.

10%: Provide academic interventions, tutoring, and support to ensure students meet graduation and postsecondary readiness goals. Prepare students for advanced coursework (Honors, AP, dual enrollment, or CTE science pathways where applicable). Support development of scientific literacy, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills aligned to Arizona graduation requirements.

10%: Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and expectations. Adhere to Arizona Educator Code of Ethics, student confidentiality requirements, and school policies. Complete required documentation, compliance tasks, and mandated trainings; participate in supervision, school events, committees, or activities that support the school's mission and operations


Minimum Qualifications


Bachelor's degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or related field.


*Specific degree disciplines or coursework may be required depending on the assignment.


Desired Qualifications

  1. Experience teaching Science according to Arizona State Science standards
  2. Experience with research-based instructional teaching strategies
  3. Experience working with underrepresented youth (or Title I School)
  4. Experience using data to improve instruction and student outcomes
  5. Experience using formative and summative assessment data to inform instruction, interventions, and enrichment
  6. Ability to integrate literacy, mathematics, and technology into science instruction to support college readiness
  7. Interest in or experience with dual enrollment, STEM pathways, project-based learning, or college-career readiness initiatives preferred
  8. One year of full-time, relevant MCCCD experience within the previous two years

  • MCCCD does not sponsor individuals for any type of work visa
  • May be required to lift or carry up to 25 lbs
  • May be required to sit for a prolonged period of time, viewing a computer monitor
  • This is a specially-funded position with a projected end date of June30, 2027 with renewal contingent on funding source
  • Candidate must possess an Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card before to starting
ADA AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Positions in this class typically require: keyboarding, grasping, kneeling, stooping, crouching, pushing, pulling, lifting, standing, walking, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects including the human body.

Working Conditions: Work is routinely performed in an indoor, office environment. Work may involve the performance of office tasks, utilizing a computer or reading various documents or forms, and may also involve physical movement within the school environment in order to assess school conditions and facilities, teach, or to perform observations. The High School environment may involve moderate noise level and include moderate exposure to airborne particles such as dust or fumes associated with the maintenance or operation of a school facility.

Some work tasks may require that an incumbent be on their feet, standing, or walking while performing duties, for a considerable portion, if not all, of a work shift. Work often involves close proximity to others. May be exposed to persons in disagreeable, uncooperative, and/or emotional states.
