Senior Mechanical Design Engineer - Higher Ed Facilities

Overview The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) is responsible for institutional strategic initiatives and operations across New Jersey, including planning and construction, facilities, public safety, environmental health, transportation, housing, and auxiliary/retail operations. Posting Summary Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, seeks a Sr Design Engineer Mechanical. The role reports to the Assistant Director of Construction Technology in the Office of Architecture and Design and coordinates, designs, and budgets mechanical systems for renovation, alteration, and new construction projects. The engineer will serve as the university’s representative for mechanical issues on larger projects designed by independent consultants. Responsibilities Perform statewide mechanical design for a wide variety of academic, administrative, research, healthcare, and infrastructure projects. Coordinate with university technical staff—project management, maintenance, safety, controls, commissioning, and utilities—to ensure proper implementation of mechanical designs from conception to final acceptance. Interpret and apply the mechanical content of the University Design Standards. Provide mechanical engineering guidance to the Project Manager. Review, sign, and seal in‑house mechanical designs. Conduct professional engineering review of external consultant documents to ensure compliance with University Design Standards and applicable codes. Qualifications Minimum Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree or higher in mechanical engineering from a college or university with a TAC/ABET‑accredited engineering technology program. Minimum of five (5) years post‑licensure in engineering with demonstrated knowledge of design and construction principles. Certifications / Licenses Current registration or licensure as a Professional Engineer in the United States. Employee will have six months to obtain a New Jersey Professional Engineer license upon hire. Valid driver’s license required. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Experience with Fire Protection Systems and Building Automation Systems. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively with technical, professional, and academic personnel. Preferred Qualifications Seven (7) to ten (10) years of relevant experience preferred. Experience in mechanical engineering design for higher education facilities preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and HVAC load calculation/software. Equipment Utilized Standard office equipment and Microsoft Office platform. HVAC load calculation and related engineering software. Physical Demands and Work Environment Standard office environment. Travel among campuses and to off‑site locations; site tours at active construction sites. Special Conditions Clean driving record.
