SUMMARY: Under general supervision of the Medical Imaging Manager, OR Lead Radiologic Technologist, the Department’s Medical Director, and the surgeons regimens and procedure protocols, follows established policies and procedures, uses specialized equipment to produce Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) images for surgeons who perform specialized and non-specialized examinations in the OR. Operates high speed PACS imaging equipment to select and capture images for archiving, operates pressure injector for delivering contrast media through catheters that are positioned by the physician. All essential functions performed in the position reflect age specific needs of the geriatric, adult, and pediatric patients. Fosters patient and family centered care and nursing services in accordance with the Brown University Health and Rhode Island Hospital mission, vision, and values, with consideration of the life span, including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Consistently applies the corporate values of respect, honesty and fairness and the constant pursuit of excellence in improving the health status of the people of the region through the provision of customer-friendly, geographically accessible and high-value services within the environment of a comprehensive integrated academic health system. Is responsible for knowing and acting in accordance with the principles of the Brown University Health Corporate Compliance Program and Code of Conduct. Maintains work areas in a clean and orderly condition using aseptic cleaning techniques where necessary. Ensures that examination rooms are properly supplied, equipped, and operational before each examination. May assist in setting up sterile supply trays required by physician. Positions and informs patients as needed regarding the imaging procedure to obtain desired results, and to allay patient fears. Is responsible for operating imaging equipment and seeing all imaging services are able to accomplish the required procedures, which includes but not limited to determining proper exposure factors with respect to patient size and procedure to be performed and setting all other equipment functions to assure optimum technical results without unnecessary repeat exposures or delays of the procedure. Prepares the power injector for proper delivery of contrast material according to protocols that are defined by the surgeon. Operates specialized complex radiographic equipment using PACS technology to capture high speed sequenced critical images during the procedure and selecting images for archiving using protocols that are defined by the surgeon. Verifies/links proper sequence of images with the correct patient demographics as they appear in LifeChart to assure accuracy of study. Records and completes logs and paperwork that are pertinent to procedures performed (Fluoro time). Understands and practices ALARA principles of radiation Protection including the use and exchange of personal dose measuring devices. Assists nursing staff as needed to assure adequate medical supply items are available. Works with the OR Lead Radiologic Technologist to report equipment performance problems and to keep equipment in good functioning condition. Works with vendors as needed to assure elective / PM repair work can be accomplished in a short a time frame as possible and without interruption of normal OR operations. Is generally responsible for the imaging services during surgical procedure. Performs other OR imaging procedures and related tasks as assigned. Trains new staff to work in the specialized OR suites as needed. Regularly performs all the duties of Radiologic Technologist. BASIC KNOWLEDGE: Two years of formal training in an approved School of radiological technology, plus registration through the American Registry for Radiologic Technologists. Current/valid license from the Department of Health to practice in the State of Rhode Island. Must hold a current CPR certification from AHA, BLS for Healthcare Providers Must have the interpersonal skills necessary to interface effectively with the following groups: Patients, in order to allay their fears and anxieties. Physicians and other staff members in a team working relationship. Other hospital employees and outsiders to exchange information. Must be able to demonstrate critical thinking skills an ability to function without direct supervision. Must have the analytical ability to calculate and select the proper technical factors to provide acceptable images and to simultaneously operate a variety of equipment. Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. EXPERIENCE: Requires between three to six months of on the job training in OR special procedure rooms, and complete competencies as defined by the management of Diagnostic Imaging. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Exposure to blood and various bodily fluids, but there is little chance of injury when established safety procedures are followed. Works in an area where there is little discomfort due to noise, dust or heat. Exposed to radiation, but hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety precautions. Must have the physical dexterity and strength to position the patient and operate equipment. INDEPENDENT ACTION: Performs independently within the Diagnostic Department, and the applicable RIH OR policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to supervisor where clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required.
