Clinical Assistant Professor

LSU Health Sciences Center - New Orleans

An Assistant Professor will provide leadership in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He/she must have completed a four-year graduate degree in dentistry, a minimum four-year hospital surgical OMS residency program with an excellent track record in research in the specialty or related areas. Will be expected to develop and maintain a research program in line with existing Department strategy. In addition, you will take an active role in the delivery of the resident teaching program and you will have the opportunity to establish strong links with other departments for education, service and research. The oral and maxillofacial surgeon must provide quality care with maximum patient comfort and safety in the clinic setting and hospital facility providing treatment for conditions such as: Removal of Diseased and Impacted Teeth, and Anesthesia Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons remove impacted, damaged, and non-restorable teeth. They also provide sophisticated, safe, and effective anesthesia services in their office including intravenous (IV) sedation and general anesthesia. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, in close collaboration with restorative dentists, help plan and then place implants used to replace missing teeth. They can also reconstruct bone in places needing bone for implant placement and modify gingival (gum) tissue surrounding implants when necessary to make teeth placed on implants look even more natural. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons care for facial injuries by repairing routine and complex facial skin lacerations (cuts), setting fractured jaw and facial bones, reconnecting severed nerves and ducts, and treating other injuries. These procedures include care of oral tissues, the jaws, cheek and nasal bones, the forehead, and eye sockets. Pathologic Conditions Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons manage patients with benign and malignant cysts and tumors of the oral and facial regions. Severe infections of the oral cavity, salivary glands, jaws, and neck are also treated. Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgery Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons correct jaw, facial bone and facial soft tissue problems left as the result of previous trauma or removal of pathology. This surgery to restore form and function often includes moving skin, bone, nerves, and other tissues from other parts of the body to reconstruct the jaws and face. These same skills are also used when oral and maxillofacial surgeons perform cosmetic procedures for improvement of problems due to unwanted facial features or aging. Facial Pain Including Temporomandibular Joint Disorders Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons possess skills in the diagnosis and treatment of facial pain disorders including those due to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems. Correction of Dento-facial (Bite) Deformities and Birth Defects Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, usually in conjunction with an orthodontist, surgically reconstruct and realign the upper and lower jaws into proper dental and facial relationships to provide improved biting function and facial appearance. They also surgically correct birth defects of the face and skull including cleft lip and palate. Regular attendance is required to perform the functions of this position. Incumbent will maintain a customer-oriented awareness in acknowledging and responding to needs as they occur that customer satisfaction is met at all times. Essential Position Functions & Duties 75% Clinical Responsibilities Surgical Procedures Removing impacted, damaged, or non-restorable teeth (including wisdom teeth). Performing dental implant placements and bone grafting to regenerate deficient tissues. Managing jaw irregularities through corrective jaw (orthognathic) surgery and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) treatments. Treating facial trauma (fractured jaws, cheekbones) and oral/head and neck infections. Diagnostics and Consultations Evaluating patient medical/dental history and analyzing radiographs or 3D scans. Performing biopsies and assessing oral pathology for benign and malignant conditions. Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams—such as orthodontists, prosthodontists, and oncologists—to plan treatment goals. Clinical Administration & Patient Education Administering and monitoring sedation or general anesthesia during surgical procedures. Documenting patient data and ensuring detailed notes of appointments are maintained in electronic records. Instructing patients on oral health, pre-operative preparation, and post-operative care routines. 20% Resident Management Teach OMFS residents, fellows, and dental/medical students through lectures, seminars, clinical instruction, and operative training. Participate in academic leadership, curriculum enhancement, and departmental strategic initiatives. Contribute to scholarly activity, including research, publications, presentations, and academic collaborations. Represent the department at educational committees, faculty meetings, and institutional academic functions. Non-Essential Position Functions & Duties 5% Marginal Functions (5%) Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications The applicant must meet the following: M.D., D.M.D./M.D., or equivalent medical degree Completion of accredited residency training in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Board certification or board eligibility in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Demonstrated excellence in clinical surgery, teaching, and academic engagement Eligibility for required medical licensure and credentialing within the institution Preferred Qualifications Board Eligible or Board Certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS). Experience in an academic health sciences center, teaching hospital, or residency training program. Experience teaching residents, dental students, medical students, or interprofessional learners. Evidence of scholarly activity, research, publications, quality improvement, or grant participation. Experience with outpatient anesthesia, hospital-based surgical procedures, trauma, pathology, reconstructive surgery, or related areas of oral and maxillofacial surgery. #J-18808-Ljbffr
