Department Summary The Williams Institute, a national research center on sexual orientation law and public policy at UCLA School of Law, seeks an experienced and energetic development professional with a passion for advancing the mission of the Institute and meeting and exceeding development goals. The Williams Institute current budget is over $6 million. The Director of Development will be responsible for leading the Williams Institute's corporate and individual giving programs, including events, gift solicitation, public and private grants, donor cultivation, program endorsement, development operations, and support staff management. In addition, the Director of Development will supervise and work closely with the Institute’s Assistant Director of Grant and Finance Administration, overseeing grant management and budgeting for the Institute. The candidate must possess a high level of judgment in developing ambitious programs that will result in the expansion of the Institute's income base, budget, and impact. This position supervises a team of four full-time staff, including the Fundraising Manager and the Assistant Director of Grant and Finance Adminstration, who directly supervises two staff members. Salary & Compensation UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common. Qualifications Minimum of eight years Progressive responsibility and experience as a professional development officer and/or prior professional experience in a related field such as sales, marketing or business development. (Required) Minimum of five years Event planning experience in a non-profit development environment. (Required) Skill in interacting diplomatically and discretely with the public in a public contact setting. (Required) Excellent written communication skills; knowledge of proper punctuation, spelling, sentence construction, paragraph construction, and correct grammar in order to compose and edit solicitations, business correspondence, and respond to donor inquiries. (Required) Strong documented record of gifts solicited and closed in the special and major gifts range and/or solicitations of a similar nature, level and complexity. (Required) Expert knowledge of gift terminology and the ability to apply that language to achieve the goals of a fund raising program. (Required) Advanced knowledge of fundraising principles and techniques sufficient to complete a variety of projects and assignments successfully and with minimal supervision. (Preferred) Ability to design and maintain spreadsheets that analyzes various fund information. (Required) Ability to interpret all policies governing donor relations and development. (Required) Proficiency with donor databases and with the Advance database. (Preferred) Advanced ability to organize and implement the logistical requirements of events and programs, including materials, information, and people in a systematic way to optimize efficiency. (Required) Ability to analyze strategy to cultivate new funding streams. (Required) Understanding of, and experience with, organizational budgets, including creating budgets and tracking expenditures. (Required) Understanding of, and experience with, grant management, including proposals, budgets, and reports. (Required) Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations Bachelor's Degree in related area/or equivalent combination of education and experience (Required) Or Special Conditions for Employment Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation. Live Scan Background Check: A Live Scan background check must be completed prior to the start of employment. Age Requirement: Candidate(s) must be 18 years or older to be eligible to be hired. Advanced computer proficiency in order to operate personal computer and be able to use a variety of computer software in a Windows environment, such as Word, Excel, Access, Photoshop, etc. (Required) Commitment to the Williams Institute's mission and passion for improving the lives of LGBT people through independent and rigorous research. (Required) Ability to analyze situations, define problems and objectives, identify relevant factors, formulate logical conclusions, and recognize alternatives expeditiously. (Required) Ability to work some overtime, evenings, and weekends for fund-raising special events. (Required) Excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability to work with the donors, alumni, students, administrators, and colleagues. (Required) Strong organizational skills and ability to work effectively under conditions of heavy work load, frequent interruptions, distractions, and deadlines.
