hood technician : is responsible for cleaning, inspecting, and maintaining the exhaust systems above commercial cooking equipment in places like restaurants, schools, hospitals, and cafeterias.

The job typically includes:

• Cleaning grease from kitchen exhaust hoods, ductwork, exhaust fans, and filters.
• Inspecting the system for fire hazards, damage, or maintenance issues.
• Ensuring the system meets fire and safety standards, such as those in NFPA 96.
• Taking apart and reinstalling filters and fan components as needed.
• Using pressure washers, scrapers, degreasers, and specialized cleaning equipment.
• Working overnight or during off-hours, since restaurants are usually cleaned after they close.
• Climbing ladders and sometimes working on rooftops to clean exhaust fans.
• Completing service reports and placing inspection stickers after the work is finished.

The work is physically demanding. Hood technicians often:

• Lift 50 pounds or more.
• Work in hot, greasy environments.
• Spend long periods standing, bending, climbing, and reaching.
• Drive between customer locations during a shift.

It’s an important job because removing grease buildup greatly reduces the risk of kitchen fires and helps restaurants stay compliant with health and fire regulations
