The District School Nurse supports and promotes optimal student health and well-being by implementing established district and medical policies and procedures. This role is responsible for developing, reviewing, updating, and maintaining health-related policies, protocols, and procedures in alignment with evidence-based research, current standards of care, and input from relevant district committees and boards. The School Nurse ensures that all health services practices are consistent, compliant, and reflective of best practices in school nursing and student care.

Qualifications

• Current Michigan State Licensure as a Registered Nurse
• Associate Degree in Nursing and BSN Bachelor of Science in Nursing
• Current CPR/AED and FA certification (maintenance while employed).
• Experience working with school age children, staff, parents/guardians and physicians.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive nursing services, including routine daily care, health assessments, and emergency treatment for student illness and injury.
• Assess, manage, and respond to student and staff health concerns in accordance with established medical protocols and district procedures.
• Communicate effectively with parents/guardians, students, healthcare providers, and school personnel regarding health-related issues, concerns, and interventions.
• Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and emergency care plans for students with chronic and complex medical conditions.
• Train, delegate, and monitor school personnel in the safe performance of health-related procedures, including but not limited to diabetes management, asthma care, allergy response, seizure protocols, medication administration, and other specialized health needs.
• Collaborate with the Oakland County Health Division, healthcare providers, community agencies, families, and school personnel to ensure continuity of care and support student health and wellness.
• Lead efforts to prevent and control communicable diseases by monitoring health trends, conducting health assessments, implementing infection control measures, and providing education to staff and families.
• Coordinate required reporting and communication with local and state health departments regarding communicable diseases and public health concerns.
• Monitor and implement current state, federal, and local public health guidelines and recommendations to maintain a safe and healthy learning environment.
• Serve as a health resource to teachers, administrators, and support staff by providing guidance on medical procedures, student health needs, and health-related accommodations while maintaining strict confidentiality.
• Provide health education materials, resources, and training to staff regarding student health conditions, safety practices, and wellness initiatives.
• Maintain accurate and confidential student health records, including emergency contact information, immunization compliance, medication documentation, and other required medical records.
• Consult and collaborate with teachers, administrators, counselors, and other support personnel to address student health concerns and promote student success.
• Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and contribute health-related information to support student educational planning and services.
• Promote a safe, healthy, and supportive school environment that enhances student well-being and academic achievement.
