Military and Family Life Counselor - Short Term Assignments or On Demand for On Site

Overview The Assignment Ready Counselor (ARC) will provide coverage in short-term, surge, and on-demand situations resulting from military needs such as post‑deployment events or to cover an existing counselor’s absence. The Summer ARC counselor position covers assignments during the May 15th through September 15th period, coinciding with the school summer break. With minimal guidance, the ARC delivers a full range of Adult or Child and Youth Behavioral (CYB) counseling services to military service members and their families at military installations. Services include non‑medical counseling, training and wellness presentations, consultation with parents, childcare personnel, and command regarding behavioral health issues, as well as counseling directly to adults, children, and youth. Responsibilities Provide non‑medical, short‑term, solution‑focused counseling to adults, children, and youth of service members. Conduct assessment, brief counseling, action planning, referrals, and follow‑up as indicated. Deliver training and health‑and‑wellness presentations and participate in health fairs and base‑installation activities. Enter counselor activity data daily through a smartphone or web application, ensuring accurate reporting and confidentiality. Work closely with installation and military branch Points of Contact (POC) to assure program delivery within scope and aligned with installation needs. Support CF schools, DoDEA schools, community schools, youth programs, summer camps, and other assignment sites as needed. Respond quickly to emergent situations in any physical location on a military installation or school setting, including traveling short and long distances within the base. Maintain working relationships with community resources, provide appropriate linkages, and manage duty‑to‑warn and restricted reporting situations per DoD protocol. Participate in regular supervision, quality‑improvement committees, in‑services/training, and other contract activities as assigned. Respond to critical incidents and special requests directed by POC and approved by the program manager. Qualifications Master’s Degree from an accredited graduate program in a mental‑health related field or social work. Current licensure required (e.g., LPC, Licensed Professional Counselor) meeting State, Commonwealth, or client‑specific requirements. Advanced knowledge of brief therapy and solution‑focused counseling methods. Ability to work effectively with minimal instruction and guidance, building rapport quickly with clients, families, students, and coworkers. Willingness to accept assignments of undefined periods, including weekends, in full‑time roles varying from a weekend to two weeks. Ability to quickly engage and communicate with military members, spouses, or children in any physical location on a military installation or school setting. Familiarity with military culture desired; prior military service or military family member preferred. For CYB positions: must meet Magellan MFLC CYB criteria for experience with children and youth and specialty in child and adolescent development/psychology. Proof of U.S. citizenship and fluency in English. Ability to comply with site‑specific requirements, including necessary immunizations and record of receipt.
