Venture Dynamics is seeking a skilled Marine Diesel Mechanic to support propulsion system repair and maintenance aboard Navy and commercial vessels in active shipyard environments. This role may also be referred to as a Diesel Shaft Mechanic or Shaft Mechanic and focuses primarily on shaft line work, propulsion alignment, and diesel engine repair in dry dock and shipboard settings. The Marine Diesel Mechanic will perform precision mechanical work on shaft assemblies, stern tubes, bearings, couplings, and rotating equipment to meet ship repair specifications and production requirements. Assignments are project-based and may continue based on performance and contract demand, with the potential for long-term placement or permanent hire with select clients.

Per diem may be available depending on contract requirements and travel distance.

Responsibilities

• Disassemble, inspect, repair, and reassemble diesel engines, shaft lines, bearings, couplings, and propulsion components aboard Navy and commercial vessels
• Perform shaft alignment and vibration checks using dial indicators, feeler gauges, laser alignment tools, and precision measuring equipment
• Install and remove propellers, shaft seals, stern tubes, and rudder assemblies in dry dock and shipboard environments
• Conduct mechanical repairs on pumps, gearboxes, and auxiliary propulsion systems aboard vessels and in shipyard production environments
• Use hand tools, power tools, and precision instruments to ensure proper fit, alignment, and system functionality across propulsion system components
• Read and interpret mechanical drawings, technical specifications, and ship repair work packages to guide Marine Diesel Mechanic tasks accurately
• Work alongside pipefitters, outside machinists, and other trades to complete propulsion system repairs in a coordinated shipyard environment

Requirements

• Minimum 3 years of ship repair experience with demonstrated proficiency in marine diesel propulsion systems and shaft work
• Strong working knowledge of shaft alignment, bearing fits, and mechanical tolerances on shipboard rotating equipment
• Experience removing and installing propellers, rudders, shaft seals, stern tubes, and propulsion components in shipyard environments
• Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, schematics, and technical repair documentation
• Must be able to obtain base access credentials (DBIDS) as required by the military installation
• Must pass background screening and drug testing per customer requirements
• Ability to work in confined spaces, at heights, and in physically demanding shipboard environments including machinery spaces and shaft alleys

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working aboard U.S. Navy vessels or in NAVSEA-governed shipyard environments
• Experience with vibration analysis and advanced alignment tools on marine propulsion systems
• Experience with large-bore diesel engines and marine propulsion systems
• OSHA 10 Maritime certification or ability to obtain

Additional Information

Work is performed aboard vessels, in dry docks, and in industrial shipyard environments supporting Navy and commercial repair operations. Duties may involve confined or elevated spaces and active production areas including machinery spaces, shaft alleys, and below-deck compartments. Exposure to industrial noise, energized systems, oils, dust, fumes, and environmental conditions is expected; respiratory protection may be required based on task or location. PPE is required in accordance with site safety policies. Work schedules may include overtime, nights, weekends, and variable shifts based on production needs. Reliable transportation is required to report to assigned shipyard or project locations.
