Position Summary Performs a variety of skilled and semi‑skilled electrical and building maintenance tasks. Activities include electrical service installation, new circuit installation, electrical repair, preventative maintenance and inspection, generator service, and assistance with heating, air conditioning, carpentry and plumbing repairs as needed. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Maintain and repair facility electrical systems and equipment, ensuring operability and proper maintenance. Must be able to read schematics, plans, and blueprints. Perform preventative maintenance on electrical load centers, motors, and related equipment. Troubleshoot, diagnose, and correct electrical problems in power distribution, electrical equipment, and lighting systems. Install, remove, repair, overhaul, and test electrical equipment, both alternating and direct current. Work to meet current electrical codes, county policy, and industry practices. Replace faulty switches, sockets, plugs, fuses, insulators, and other simple electrical components. Inspect work sites to determine required materials, equipment, tools, and methods. Assist the energy‑management program by suggesting methods to reduce electrical usage. Create and implement a preventative maintenance schedule for emergency generators. Provide assistance with daily maintenance tasks in mechanical, plumbing, and carpentry areas. Assist with seasonal and general operations and maintenance needs as required. Work within the department’s on‑call procedure for emergency repairs. Other duties as assigned. Supervision Received Supervised by the Director of Buildings Operations & Maintenance or designee. Supervisory Responsibilities May occasionally work alongside and direct or instruct Custodian I, II, HVAC Technician, and Maintenance Workers during repairs that require instruction. Experience, Skills, and Education High school diploma (or equivalent) required. Must possess and maintain a State of Michigan Journeyman Electrician license during employment; candidates must have held and worked under such a license for a minimum of 3‑5 years. Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety code regulations, and safe use of tools, equipment, and materials. Reasonable knowledge of local building construction codes. Significant knowledge in commercial electrical trades, including high voltage. Reasonable knowledge of plumbing, carpentry, and small engine repair. Installation, operation, and repair of equipment involved in building operations. Writing, reading, and mathematical proficiency; proficient computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook); sound judgment and decision‑making; independent research and problem solving; knowledge of county operations; effective time management; ability to handle stressful situations; customer service; critical thinking. Effective communication with management, co‑workers, and clients; accurate information conveyance; application of common sense to complex instructions; presentation of complex ideas through graphs, charts, reports, or other professional correspondence. Read, write, and communicate in English; follow written and verbal instruction; understand basic mathematics and figure checking. Interpret and apply procedures, rules, technical information, instructions, and manuals to complete tasks accurately and on schedule. Learn from directions, observations, and mistakes; apply procedures using good judgment. Use discretion and maintain sensitive and confidential information. Work independently or as part of a team; interact appropriately with county officials, employees, vendors, and the public. Work under supervision, receiving instructions, coaching, counseling, and/or discipline. Adaptability to change; manage competing demands; handle frequent changes, delays, or unexpected events. Knowledge of customer‑service principles and processes, including needs assessment, quality standards, and satisfaction evaluation. Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook). Conditions of Employment Must complete a satisfactory background check before starting employment (drug screening, physical exam, criminal background, driving record, sex offender registry, education, training, licensing verification, employment history, credit check, references). Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan Operator’s License and maintain driver eligibility per the county’s vehicle policy. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Speak to others to convey information effectively. Read, interpret, and understand procedures, rules, technical information, instructions, and manuals. Hear and understand spoken information. Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color, and depth perception. Use hands to operate a computer, handle materials, and operate equipment. Push or pull carts; reach with hands and arms forward, above, and below shoulder level. Lift, move, or carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Perform ergonomic movements: sit, bend, stoop, crouch, crawl, kneel. Stand, walk, and climb stairs. Normal office hours: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Generally works in a normal office environment. Noise level is moderate with frequent interruptions.
