Residential Health & Safety Manager - RHSM (WS-ST3)
The Residential Health & Safety Manager (RHSM) is a student staff position in the office of Residence Life. This position's primary goal is to support Residence Life and the functional area, Housing Operations. The RHSM provides support in the following areas: facilities, residence halls, environmental health and safety, sustainability, and administrative tasks. The RHSM will be reporting to the Associate Dean of Students for Residence Life & Student Conduct/designee.
Leadership: Serving as a primary role model for safety compliance and training peer staff on emergency response protocols.
Communication: Articulating complex safety mandates clearly and compassionately to the residential community during high-stress situations
Supervision/Administrative Responsibilities:
- Periodic supervision of Residential Facility Assistants (RFAs)
- Receive, sort, and distribute supplies and inventory audit
- Receive phone calls, mail, emails, and all other communication and ensure they are properly distributed
- Support data entry and assist with creating and maintaining department files, records, and storage systems (physical and electronic)
- Assist with housing records, damage bills, etc
- Attend all training, in-services, and development meetings requested by the Residence Life Office
- Manage office email accounts
- Support the opening and closing of the office
- RHSM shall support their professional supervisor through administrative tasks as assigned, including but not limited to:
- Bi-weekly individual meetings with a professional supervisor
- Documentation of on-duty activities
- Weekly reports
- Program Evaluations
- Adherence to any blackout dates provided by professional staff to ensure adequate staffing during high-need periods
- Other duties assigned
Fire:
- Conduct building walk-throughs
- Conduct room inspections and inventories
- Assist HOC on fire drills and drug sweeps
- Escort vendors within the residence halls
- Support the evaluation of residential safety initiatives
- Identification, documentation, and reporting of maintenance/facilities/health and safety concerns or emergencies
Health:
- Coordinate room health and safety checks
- Outreach to on-campus residents on safety and security concerns
- Maintain bulletin board material for ADOFS boards in halls
- Coordinate education material for issues related to topics, including mold/mildew/ pest control and sustainability
Safety:
- Assist in the training of contracted security staff
- Generate reports on contracted security monthly/semester to the supervisor
- Conduct performance and quality inspections on contracted staff
- Conduct a monthly meeting with contracted staff leadership
- Coordinate Campus Housing Safety Walks
- Coordinate quarterly checks of surveillance cameras
- Coordinate updates of manuals, including but not limited to the Building Emergency Awareness Plan (BEAP)
Publications and Communication:
- Maintain supply of needed forms for facilities area: sustainability and recycling materials and signage, cleaning checklists, fire safety checklists, check-in/out forms, check-in packet material, and fire safety brochures
- Aid in creating and updating files on health and safety
- Create signs for halls as needed to update on facility-related issues
- Maintain marketing materials for the facilities team
- Communicate with students and staff regarding facility and emergencies in various media forms (email, signage, documents, letters, etc.)
- Prepare opening/closing material packets for staff and signage for students
Residential Support:
- Community Development and Peer Advising:
- RHSMs shall support programming initiatives as requested by their professional supervisor
- RHSMs shall develop positive relationships with the residents through formal and informal engagement efforts
- RHSMs shall role model appropriate behavior within the residence hall to students and colleagues, abiding by and upholding College policies on a campus-wide basis.
- RHSMs shall assist residents in need within the scope of their training, including referral to various campus resources and triaging student concerns to the appropriate professional staff
- Conduct Facilitation:
- RHSMs shall address breaches of College policy (as outlined in the student code of conduct) through the appropriate confrontation of the responsible parties and documentation of these incidents
Compensation/Benefits:
- Wage: Any administrative hours worked outside of the on-call rotation will be paid at an hourly rate
Time Commitment:
- Summary of Time Commitments :
- Average hours per week: RHSMs can expect a weekly average of up to 8 hours.
- Special Time Commitments:
- Full Participation in Staff Training
- Assist with all other housing transitions, including Fall, January Term, Spring, and Summer move-ins and closings when applicable.
- Regular Common Meeting Time Requirement:
- Every Monday, 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. The meeting may be canceled when necessary
- Other meetings may be scheduled where necessary
- In-Service Time:
- 3rd Thursdays of each month, 6:30 p.m. -7:30 p.m.
- Other Meetings/Trainings/Professional Development:
- There may be other opportunities to support the student staff in their role. Student staff members are expected to participate unless there are obligations communicated to the supervisor during the hiring process or an academic schedule conflict
- Fall Hours/week:
- If an academic class is taken: Minimum 8 - Maximum 20
- If no academic class is taken: Minimum 8 - Maximum 40
- If the summer positions require student leaders to perform their role in the spring or fall semester, the hours above are negotiated.
Requirements of this position (Education):
- Minimum cumulative/semester GPA of 2.5
- Good academic standing
- No open sanctions
- Assignment of academic probation or disciplinary sanctioning at any point during employment may result in immediate dismissal from this position.
- Successful completion of a criminal background check after hire.
Qualifications (Experience/Skills):
- Background or coursework in public health, safety, risk management, or a related field.
- Prior experience navigating crisis situations (e.g., lifeguard, first responder, or Resident Assistant).
- Strong conflict resolution skills to handle tense situations and enforce university policy fairly.
- Demonstrated capability to train and educate peer staff on emergency response protocols.
- Advanced communication skills to articulate critical safety mandates clearly during high-stress moments.
- High attention to detail for conducting thorough health inspections and identifying safety hazards.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with campus security, facilities, and local emergency services
Physical and Environmental Factors:
This position requires crouching, kneeling/crawling, stooping, twisting/pivoting, reaching overhead, grasping/handling, pushing/pulling, lifting and carrying objects up to 50 lbs., repetitive motions, and driving to perform the essential functions. It also requires exposure to loud noise, vibrations, and proximity hazards and rare exposure to respiratory factors, chemicals, wet or humid conditions indoors, extreme cold, extreme heat, and heights or cramped quarters to perform the essential functions. Protective equipment is required for some essential functions. Candidates must possess the ability to safely perform the physical work required of all duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
