Summer Camp Nurse

The City of St. Cloud Parks & Recreation Department is looking for a passionate and skilled Registered Nurse to join our summer camp team for the 2026 season. This is a 10-week seasonal opportunity to be the healthcare anchor for one of St. Cloud's most beloved summer programs — serving approximately 225 energetic children ages 5 to 12 every single day. Working Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, you'll enjoy a consistent daytime schedule while being part of a fun, fast-paced camp environment alongside a dedicated team of recreation professionals committed to creating safe, memorable summer experiences for the kids in our community. The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary. Provides first aid and basic nursing care to campers, including assessment and treatment of minor injuries and illnesses, application of bandages and ice packs, and compassionate care and reassurance to children as needed. Administers authorized prescribed medications brought by campers in accordance with written parental or guardian authorization and applicable health protocols. Administers emergency medications, including epinephrine auto-injectors, as authorized by standing orders, physician protocols, or applicable Florida law, in response to severe allergic reactions or other medical emergencies. Exercises independent clinical judgment to determine when emergency medical services (EMS) are required; initiates emergency response procedures and serves as the on‑site medical point of contact until EMS arrives. Contacts parents or guardians promptly to report injuries, illnesses, or incidents occurring during camp; completes all required injury, incident, and health documentation accurately and in a timely manner. Maintains and safeguards confidential camper medication files, health records, and injury documentation in compliance with applicable privacy requirements and City policies. Reviews camper health forms and medication authorization documentation at the start of each camp session; identifies campers with known allergies, medical conditions, or special health needs and communicates relevant information to camp staff as appropriate. Maintains the cleanliness, organization, and appropriate supply inventory of the camp health office; reports supply needs to the Recreation Superintendent in a timely manner. Performs other related duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Associate's degree in Nursing from an accredited program required. Active Florida Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing; OR active Registered Nurse license from a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) member state that authorizes practice in the State of Florida. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, which includes CPR and AED, issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross or equivalent agency, required. Current First Aid certification required. Experience as a school nurse, pediatric nurse, camp nurse, or in another role providing direct nursing care to children is preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License with an acceptable driving history. Desirable Certifications Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities The Summer Camp Nurse must possess working knowledge of pediatric nursing practices, first aid principles, and the assessment and management of common childhood injuries and illnesses. The position requires knowledge of medication administration protocols, including the safe handling and documentation of prescribed and emergency medications in a non‑clinical setting. The incumbent must demonstrate sound clinical judgment in evaluating the severity of medical situations and making timely decisions regarding the need for emergency services. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential, including the ability to interact calmly and compassionately with children in distress, communicate clearly with parents and guardians during stressful situations, and collaborate effectively with camp staff and City leadership. The ability to maintain accurate health records, exercise discretion in handling confidential medical information, and adapt quickly to changing situations in a dynamic outdoor program environment is required. Physical Requirements The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Working Conditions Work is primarily performed indoors in the camp health office; however, this position regularly requires outdoor work in summer weather conditions to respond to incidents occurring in outdoor program areas. The incumbent must be able to work effectively in warm to hot temperatures and in varying environmental conditions typical of outdoor summer recreational programs. This position involves regular direct contact with children and occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and communicable illnesses; appropriate universal precautions and personal protective equipment will be available and required.
