About the role

Nine Orchard is a 113-room hotel in the restored 1912 bank building at the corner of Canal and Orchard on Manhattan's Lower East Side. Our guests come from every walk of life and every corner of the world, and they choose the Lower East Side for a reason. They notice everything.

The Director of Finance is the hotel's key business partner and financial steward. You will direct the accounting and control functions at the property, ensure the timely and accurate reporting of operating results, and maintain the integrity of the hotel's financial and management information systems.

You will work alongside the General Manager, the Director of Food & Beverage, and every department leader to turn the numbers into decisions — helping the team deliver hospitality of the highest quality while achieving the hotel's business goals. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who is as comfortable coaching a department head through a forecast as they are closing the books.

We are looking for a sharp, service-minded finance leader who understands that great hospitality and a healthy bottom line go hand in hand. Reports to the hotel's General Manager.

What you'll own Accounting and reporting

• Supervise all accounting functions for the property
• Prepare financial statements within the closing schedule and in accordance with company policies and procedures, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, and the Uniform System of Accounts
• Maintain monthly balance sheet analysis with full supporting detail
• Ensure all financial reports, budgets, forecasts, and other required information are accurately compiled and submitted on time, identifying variances and recommending improvements
• Ensure the integrity and efficiency of the hotel's financial systems and data processing

Planning and analysis

• Analyze and interpret financial results to advise the General Manager and Executive Team
• Prepare accurate forecasts and cash flow statements as needed
• Review budgets and forecasts prepared by department leaders to ensure ownership and the General Manager have performance guidelines that are both reasonable and achievable
• Monitor economic, social, and governmental trends and keep leadership informed of anything that may affect the hotel's or restaurants' financial performance

Treasury, tax, and controls

• Ensure effective treasury and cash management and compliance with the management agreement and related legal documents
• Prepare timely and accurate sales, use, and occupancy tax returns, along with any other required external reports and filings
• Ensure all legal, treasury, and tax documentation is properly maintained and secured, and that all statutory, fiscal, permit, and licensing requirements are met
• Install and maintain controls that protect the hotel's assets against loss or misappropriation
• Uphold security and confidentiality standards across computer systems, keys, locks, inventory, and property and employee information

Leadership and partnership

• Serve as a trusted business partner to all levels of management in support of exceptional guest service
• Partner with the General Manager and Director of Food & Beverage to achieve established business goals
• Coach department heads on their financial responsibilities and effective financial management
• Maintain clear, consistent communication with MML Hospitality corporate finance

Who we're looking for Required

• 6+ years of progressive hotel accounting experience, with demonstrated leadership responsibility
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word
• Working knowledge of hotel and restaurant systems
• High energy, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a demonstrated ability to improve the bottom line
• A motivating leader and effective communicator with a service-oriented style and polished presentation skills
• Clear, concise written and verbal communication skills in English
• Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and administrative skills
• The ability to work effectively with people of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds

Preferred

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Hospitality
• Hotel opening or pre-opening experience
• Experience with Alice, Infor, Toast, Shopify, and/or BevSpot

What we expect in the first 12 months

• Deliver an accurate, on-time monthly close every month, in line with the closing schedule
• Build a reliable annual budget and rolling forecast process in partnership with department leaders
• Establish clear monthly financial reviews with the General Manager and department heads, with variances explained and acted on
• Strengthen internal controls and cash management, with a clean audit and full tax and licensing compliance
• Equip every department head to understand and own their financial results

Compensation and benefits

• Base salary:175,000–$195,000, commensurate with experience
• Annual bonus
• Unlimited PTO

Working conditions

• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
• May require lifting up to 50 pounds on a daily basis
• May require sitting for up to eight hours, and standing, walking, pushing, kneeling, bending, balancing, squatting, reaching, and stretching for up to two hours per day
