Veterinary Extern - General Practice

Externship Overview An externship experience at an NVA hospital gives students a unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice and gain valuable hands‑on clinical experience. Although each NVA hospital is unique, all share an environment that is supportive, committed to excellent medicine, and provides exceptional service to animals and their owners. Responsibilities Gather patient histories Perform physical examinations Create treatment plans Conduct diagnostics Provide dentistry services Observe, assist, or perform surgical procedures Manage patients medically Practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients Duration and Eligibility Externship experiences range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. The program is designed for veterinary students in their clinical year. Travel and Living Expense Stipend Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel and living expense stipend. Please refer to the stipend program for details on stipend amounts.
