ATTORNEY GENERAL (DEPT OF LAW) SPECIAL AGENT

Job Location: Phoenix, Tucson, and Prescott. Salary: $78,540. Grade: 21. Closing Date: Continuous. The Arizona Attorney General’s Office (AGO) seeks motivated Special Agents to be assigned to the Criminal Division/Special Investigations Section. Units within the Special Investigations Section supported by Special Agents include Major Fraud, Health Care Fraud, Consumer Fraud, and Financial Crimes. The mission of the special investigations section is to investigate fraud, intercept illicit proceeds, dismantle criminal organizations, recover assets, and protect Arizonans. Special Agent positions may be eligible for remote work and a flexible work schedule based upon the department’s business needs and continual meeting of performance measures. Responsibilities Conduct interviews of victims, witnesses, investigative leads, and suspects. Properly collect, process, control, and analyze evidence. Prepare clear, concise, grammatically correct, and detailed written reports to document all aspects of the investigation. Communicate regularly and effectively with prosecutors and provide courtroom/Grand Jury testimony as needed. Be able to physically control a suspect and be prepared and able to use deadly force if necessary. Provide support to other AGO employees and perform administrative tasks as needed. Be safety conscious and use proper work methods by following standard police policies and procedures. Maintain proficiency with a firearm and maintain AZPOST peace officer certification. Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times. Remote Options: This position may be eligible for Remote Work up to two days a week based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures. Operational considerations: As a Special Agent conducting felony investigations, work may involve varying hours, weekends, holidays, and after‑hours response; agents can also be deployed to assist allied agencies in response to a critical incident under the National Incident Management System or State of Arizona Mutual Aid protocols. Job Duties Conduct investigations (interviews, analyze evidence, write investigative reports, consult with prosecutor). Provide support to other AGO activities (search and seizure warrants, etc.). Maintain firearms proficiency and AZPOST certification; continue education. Perform administrative tasks (attend staff meetings; complete timecards and status reports; scan and copy documents; organize case files). Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs) Understand Arizona criminal and civil statutes, the criminal justice system, rules of evidence, and tactics, procedures, and techniques for general investigations, searches, seizures, and arrests. Know and understand elements and legal standards of long‑term criminal investigations involving fraud, money laundering, racketeering, and other white‑collar crimes. Familiar with financial databases that track proceeds movements; conduct analysis of financial statements. Communicate effectively across diverse backgrounds; conduct interviews and interrogations; maintain chain‑of‑custody and evidence control; prepare search/seizure warrant affidavits; plan and execute warrants; make arrests; manage time and resources; collaborate with attorneys, forensic accountants, computer forensics experts, administrative staff, and other investigators; maintain firearm proficiency. Demonstrate initiative, self‑motivation, and determination to advance investigations to successful conclusion. Selective Preference(s) In the Major Fraud Unit: Ideal applicants have at least three years of investigative experience managing diverse, complex caseloads with minimal supervision; experience authoring and executing search warrants; crime scene management; evidence collection; forensic processing of evidence; strong knowledge of Arizona Revised Statutes for fraud, political corruption, conspiracy, money laundering, racketeering, and other white‑collar crimes; team‑driven and able to collaborate with attorneys and agencies. In the Organized Retail Theft Unit: Ideal applicants have proactive investigative experience, including use of pole‑cams, GPS trackers, cell‑phone ping orders, cell‑phone extraction and analysis, and Title III wiretap affidavit writing. In the Elder Abuse Unit: Ideal applicants facilitate protection of seniors from abuse and exploitation; investigate cryptocurrency scams, financial frauds, homicides, and abuse/neglect; work with Adult Protective Services, local and federal financial task forces. Tobacco Enforcement Unit (TEU): Applicants possess thorough understanding of Arizona tobacco and vapor product laws; able to work with federal, state, local, and school officials; oversee undercover youth volunteers; assess inspection site officer safety; conduct inspections statewide; may require extensive travel. Pre‑Employment Requirements Travel required; valid Arizona Driver’s License and consent to periodic driving record checks. Certification by Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST). Must be certified or eligible via waiver within 90 days. Must have served as a certified peace officer in Arizona, another state, or federal agency; completed comparable basic and advanced training. Fingerprinting, criminal background check, polygraph test, and medical examination required. Job offer contingent on successful background check.
