Position Overview

This is an entry-level, hands-on role supporting water distribution and wastewater collection operations. The Operator-in-Training will assist with maintenance, repairs, installations, and system operations while developing the skills required for certification and advancement.

Key Responsibilities

• Participate in a rotating on-call schedule, including after-hours, weekends, and holidays.
• Assist with installation, maintenance, and repair of water and sewer lines.
• Support preventative maintenance and routine cleaning of systems and equipment.
• Help repair water/wastewater treatment equipment and distribution/collection systems.
• Operate and maintain construction and utility equipment such as backhoes, forklifts, dump trucks, and compactors.
• Perform trench work, backfilling, and restoration (concrete, asphalt, landscaping) per engineering standards.
• Turn water meters on/off and assist with meter installation and maintenance.
• Clean and clear sewer lines and perform lift station maintenance.
• Repair leaks, breaks, and defective sewer lines; adjust manhole covers and frames.
• Complete work orders, field reports, and documentation accurately.
• Perform routine equipment inspections and preventative maintenance.
• Carry out additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Class 3 Distribution Operator License or ability to obtain within 1 year.
• Construction or field work experience.
• Valid driver’s license (must be maintained).

Preferred Qualifications

• FDEP Class 2 Distribution Operator License (or ability to obtain).
• FWPCOA Class C Collections License (or ability to obtain).
• Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or ability to obtain.
