As a key member of the Aquatics team, a Swim instructor teaches both youth and adults swimming techniques & pool safety, and is responsible for proactive communication and maintaining a safe pool atmosphere while preventing accidents. The main purpose of this position is to provide a positive role model for members and to create a character‑developing atmosphere. Responsibilities Uphold the mission of the YMCA, and demonstrate behaviors that reflect a determined, nurturing, genuine, hopeful, and welcoming nature. Remain alert. Have adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals. Teach with patience and a caring attitude. Communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations. Remain in water for long periods of time. Be responsible for scheduled classes/shifts & follow appropriate substitutes procedures. Arrive 15 minutes prior to class start time to set up and greet participants. Clean up all equipment and pool deck after classes have ended. Attend all staff meetings and trainings as required by the Aquatics’ Director. Qualifications Minimum age of 15. Team player with personal commitment to the YMCA Mission, Philosophy, & Character Development Values. People‑centered, service‑oriented. YMCA Youth Swim Lesson Instructor preferred, but we will train. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Previous lifeguard experience preferred, but we will train. Must be able to swim and demonstrate strokes. Obtain CPR/AED and First Aid Certifications within 90 days of employment. Physical Demands Remain alert. Work in a wet/humid environment and come into contact with chlorine. Remain in the pool for extended periods of time. Have adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals. Continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision. Perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue. Communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations. Environment may include indoor and/or outdoor pool conditions. Lift up to 25 pounds. High noise level.
