Staff Software Engineer, AI-Accelerated Digital Commerce

Job DescriptionWork Arrangement:This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Austin, TX, Warren, MI, Sunnyvale, CA, or Mountainview, CA, three times per week, at minimum.About the teamOur team builds the digital commerce experiences that support how customers discover, buy, subscribe to, and manage GM products and services. We work across qualification, catalog, cart, checkout, billing, payments, subscriptions, orders, and customer account journeys, partnering closely with product, design, architecture, and operations teams to deliver reliable, scalable experiences. We are looking for engineers who pair strong software fundamentals with practical AI-assisted development habits to move faster, raise quality, and help the broader team work better.The roleWe are hiring a Staff Software Engineer with demonstrated ability to use AI as a force multiplier for software development in digital commerce environments. This role is ideal for a highly technical engineering leader who can use AI-assisted workflows to improve delivery speed and quality, shape reliable low-latency services and architectures, and raise team productivity through stronger engineering practices, reusable patterns, and technical leadership.What you'll doLead the design and evolution of customer-facing digital commerce systems across areas such as qualification, checkout, billing, payments, subscriptions, catalog, cart, orders, and customer account journeysUse AI-assisted workflows to accelerate implementation, code review, testing, debugging, and documentation, while setting the standard for safe and effective adoptionEvaluate AI output for correctness, security, maintainability, and production readiness, and help teams apply strong judgment in where AI adds valueDrive architecture and API decisions across modern web applications and services built with technologies such as React, Next.js, Node.js, Java, and related frameworksImprove engineering excellence through stronger design reviews, testing strategy, automation, observability, and DevOps practicesBuild reusable workflows, patterns, and guidance that improve productivity across engineers and teamsPartner across product, design, architecture, platform, and operations to align technical direction with business prioritiesCoach engineers and influence technical execution beyond direct code contributionsYour Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)At least 8-10 years of strong coding, debugging, and code review skills with the credibility to lead through technical depth7+ years API and system design capability with sound tradeoff judgmentPractical use of AI across coding, testing, debugging, documentation, and understanding existing codebases, APIs, architecture, and technical documentationAbility to use AI with structured engineering practices such as specs, reviews, tests, and observabilityHands-on experience across relevant technologies such as React, Next.js, Node.js, Java, and modern web application architectureStrong engineering excellence in test automation, operational automation, and DevOps practicesAbility to balance performance, reliability, maintainability, and cost while improving team deliveryWhat Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)Experience in digital commerce or other customer-facing digital platformsExperience in areas such as qualification, checkout, billing, payments, subscriptions, orders, catalog, cart, or customer account flowsExposure to commerce platforms or vendors such as Shopify or similar ecosystemsExposure to technologies or patterns such as Model Context Protocol (MCP), LangChain, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) patterns, vector databases, AI agents, or evaluation frameworksExperience helping teams experiment with and adopt newer AI development workflows without overengineering the solutionAdditional Information:This job may be eligible for relocation benefits.COMPENSATION: The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws.
