Job Title: Manual Machinist – Prototype Shop

Job Description

This role is based in a specialized production shop that fabricates custom rubber rollers used in a wide variety of machines. Each roller is built to precise specifications, requiring strong critical thinking and attention to detail. The work is highly varied and non-repetitive, as every roller differs in dimensions and requirements. You will primarily work as a Manual Machinist in a prototype environment while also setting up and operating one of the facility’s CNC lathes.

Responsibilities

• Fabricate custom rubber rollers to exact measurements using manual machining equipment.

• Set up and operate manual machines and one of the facility’s CNC lathes as needed.

• Read, interpret, and work from blueprints and production documentation to ensure accurate dimensions and tolerances.

• Use manual micrometers and other precision measuring tools to verify dimensions and maintain quality standards.

• Apply strong math skills and critical thinking to plan machining operations and solve unique fabrication challenges.

• Perform machine operation tasks, including setup, adjustment, and basic troubleshooting during production runs.

• Assist with assembly and related machine shop operations to support overall production needs.

• Document work clearly and accurately, using basic writing skills and computer systems to track jobs and production data.

• Collaborate with team members, offering help in other areas of the shop when needed and supporting a smooth workflow.

• Maintain a clean and organized work area, following safety protocols and using provided PPE and uniforms.

• Adapt to prototype and non-repetitive work, learning new processes and techniques as products and requirements evolve.

Essential Skills

• Proven experience operating manual machining equipment in a production or prototype environment.

• Strong math skills to perform measurements, conversions, and machining calculations accurately.

• Ability to use a manual micrometer and other precision measurement tools with confidence and accuracy.

• Demonstrated attention to detail and critical thinking skills when working with unique and precise fabrication requirements.

• Solid mechanical aptitude and comfort working with machines, tools, and mechanical assemblies.

• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and related technical documents.

• Basic computer aptitude, including the ability to learn and use manufacturing software (Epicor is used in this facility).

• Effective written communication skills to document work and follow instructions clearly.

• High level of motivation, with a genuine interest in contributing to the company’s success.

• Collaborative mindset, with a willingness to help and learn in other areas of the shop as needed.

• Ability to work comfortably in a production environment that can become warm, particularly in summer months.

• High school diploma or GED.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Background in machining or logistics is a plus.

• Military experience is considered a plus.

• Interest in learning new skills and processes in a prototype and non-repetitive environment.

• Comfort working with hands-on tasks where machine operators and grinders may get dirty hands.

• Openness to flexible scheduling and occasional voluntary overtime when needed.

• Not being a “know-it-all” and maintaining a humble, team-oriented attitude.

Work Environment

The role is based in a large, well-lit production shop that focuses on custom rubber roller fabrication. Machines generate some noise, but the environment is not excessively loud, and normal conversation is easily heard. The facility uses a state-of-the-art air purifier, keeping the air clean and minimizing dust, and the shop is maintained to a high standard of cleanliness. Machine operators and grinders may get dirty hands due to the nature of the work. Personal protective equipment and uniforms are provided, while steel-toe footwear is required and must be supplied by the employee. There is no central heating or air conditioning; the shop stays comfortably warm in colder months due to operating machinery, but summer temperatures can become very hot, with large fans and open shipping doors used to improve airflow. The standard shift runs from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with voluntary overtime available. Management is flexible with start times and schedule adjustments, working with employees to accommodate personal needs and even modifying schedules in response to weather conditions when necessary.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $25.00/hr.
