This role focuses on delivering high‑quality, recovery‑oriented psychiatric care within a state‑accredited psychiatric hospital. Responsibilities Clinical Responsibilities: Work independently or collaboratively under delegated supervision of a psychiatrist to assess, plan, and provide comprehensive psychiatric care. Prescribe medications (antipsychotics, etc.), order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic testing, consult, and refer patients as needed. Conduct face‑to‑face assessments, provide ongoing treatment, and adjust therapeutic plans based on patient progress. Lead Recovery Team Meetings, participate in court hearings, and serve as liaison to courts. Perform rounds, review hospitalized patients, and monitor changes in status. Supervise, assign, and oversee the work of other APRNs and related staff. Represent the Medical Director in their absence and perform administrative duties, including planning and quality improvement initiatives. Participate in hospital‑wide quality assessment, audit medical records, and contribute to performance improvement programs. Collaborate with physicians via telemedicine when appropriate. Essential Job Functions (EJFs): Attend work on a regular basis, with the possibility of rotating schedules, extended shifts, and overtime. Operate within scope of licensure to promote a therapeutic, safe psychiatric milieu; provide acute and long‑term care. Evaluate patients, make referrals, develop diagnosis and treatment plans, and document acute issues. Prescribe medications, order laboratory/diagnostic tests, make referrals, and interpret results. Maintain comprehensive documentation, including annual summaries, restraint use, and assessments. Monitor compliance with policies, ensure revenue enhancement, and perform audits for quality improvement. Participate in ongoing professional practice evaluation (OPPE) and provide feedback to peers. Perform disaster response/continuity of operations duties when required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) Knowledge of psychiatric nursing methods, laws, and hospital operations. Knowledge of medical/psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment procedures. Knowledge of case history development, implementation, and documentation. Skills in interpretation of laboratory results. Skills in caring for patients and using medical diagnostic and treatment tools. Ability to examine, diagnose, and treat psychiatric disorders. Ability to supervise the work of others providing psychiatric care. Ability to interact appropriately with individuals with developmental disabilities. Ability to present ideas clearly and concisely in written and oral communication. Ability to prepare and maintain medical records. Ability to work productively with professionals as an interdisciplinary team member. Ability to work independently and adapt to changing responsibilities. Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications Registered and certified as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) by the Texas Board of Nursing or a recognizing state. APRN specialization certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center or other recognized agencies. Current registration from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). National Provider Identifier (NPI#) per Medicare Part B. Initial Screening Criteria Graduation from an advanced practice RN educational program accredited by a U.S. Department of Education and Texas Board of Nursing recognized body with a master’s degree or higher. At least 2 years of clinical nursing experience. One year of APRN experience preferred. One year of supervisory or leadership experience. Additional Information Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks including CANRS, Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, employee misconduct, and LEIE. Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years of age; Waco Center for Youth applicants 21 years old. Work may require flexibility, overtime, or extended hours. Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital procedures for hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, and influenza.
