Title: Manager, Benefits & Compensation
Reports to: Director, Total Rewards
Location: This role will be remote in the continental US, Alaska, or Hawaii
FLSA Status: Exempt
Hours: Full-time
Union Status: Non-Union
Salary Range: $85,000–$100,000

Summary:
The Benefits & Compensation Manager is a key operational role on Trevor's Total Rewards team, responsible for the day-to-day administration, integrity, and continuous improvement of Trevor's benefits, compensation, and recognition programs. Reporting to the Director, Total Rewards, this manager will translate Trevor's evolving Total Rewards strategy into well-run programs that employees experience as accessible, equitable, and reflective of Trevor's mission and values.

This role is both highly hands-on and meaningfully strategic, operating across a fully-remote workforce comprised of union and non-union staff, and 24/7 shift workers. The Benefits & Compensation Manager will own the administration of Trevor's health, welfare, retirement, wellness, and leave programs; partner with the Director on compensation cycles, market benchmarking, and pay equity analysis; and serve as a trusted point of contact for employees navigating their benefits, leaves and accommodations, and pay. As Trevor cultivates its Total Rewards philosophy and implements new initiatives, the Benefits & Compensation Manager will play a central role in operationalizing those changes with care, accuracy, and clarity.

The Benefits & Compensation Manager will also serve as the back-up to the Senior Payroll Manager, providing payroll administration support during peak cycles, absences, or coverage needs. While deep payroll expertise is not required, familiarity with payroll fundamentals and a willingness to learn Trevor's payroll operations are essential.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, mission-aligned, and energized by the opportunity to strengthen the employee experience through thoughtful program administration, clear communication, and continuous improvement.

Roles and Responsibilities:
Benefits Administration & Strategy
  • Administer the day-to-day operations of Trevor's benefits programs — including health insurance, retirement plans, wellness programs, voluntary benefits, and employee perks — ensuring accuracy, accessibility, and a high-quality employee experience
  • Partner with the Director, Total Rewards to evaluate, evolve, and continuously improve benefits offerings to align with Trevor's Total Rewards philosophy and the needs of a diverse, distributed workforce comprised of both union and non-union employees
  • Lead the annual benefits open enrollment process, including planning, employee education, vendor coordination, system configuration, and execution
  • Manage relationships with benefits providers, brokers, and external consultants to ensure responsive service, plan integrity, and strong vendor performance
  • Support benefits initiatives and changes in partnership with the Director, Total Rewards
  • Serve as a key point of contact for employee benefits inquiries, providing clear, empathetic, and timely communication that helps staff understand and access the full value of their benefits
  • Develop and promote wellness initiatives that align with Trevor's commitment to mental health, total wellbeing, and inclusion, ensuring underutilized resources become visible and accessible to staff

Compensation Administration & Analysis

  • Partner with the Director, Total Rewards to operationalize Trevor's compensation strategy, including the annual compensation cycle, merit and increase administration, and recognition programs aligned to Trevor's performance, compensation, and promotion cycle timelines
  • Support the analysis, maintenance, and ongoing refresh of Trevor's pay bands and job architecture, contributing to job evaluations, classifications, and leveling consistency across the organization
  • Conduct salary and labor market research, prepare benchmarking analyses, and participate in compensation surveys for competitive and equitable pay practices as needed
  • Support pay equity audits, internal equity reviews, and compensation reporting as needed to inform decision-making at the Director and CPO level
  • Partner with Director of Total Rewards and other People Team members to provide guidance on offers, promotions, and pay decisions
Recognition & Rewards
  • Support the design, launch, and ongoing administration of Trevor's employee recognition programs, partnering with the Director, Total Rewards and the Director, Talent & Inclusion to ensure recognition reflects Trevor's values and culture
  • Administer recognition workflows, employee communications, and reporting to ensure those programs are consistently and equitably applied across the organization
Leave & Accommodations
  • Administer Trevor's leave and accommodations programs across multiple states, including FMLA leave, state-specific leave, and ADA and religious reasonable accommodations
  • Partner closely with People Business Partners, Legal, and other People team members to ensure leave and reasonable accommodations are administered with consistency, equity, and care for all Trevor employees
  • Maintain accurate documentation, tracking, and reporting on all leave and reasonable accommodation cases
Compliance & Reporting
  • Ensure benefits programs comply with all federal, state, and local regulations, including ERISA, ACA, FMLA, COBRA, HIPAA, and other applicable laws
  • Support Trevor's benefits and compensation compliance and audit-readiness framework, proactively managing Form 5500 filings, ACA reporting, nondiscrimination testing, pay transparency reporting, and benefits-related audits in partnership with the Director, Total Rewards
  • Maintain accurate employee data across HRIS and vendor systems, conducting routine audits to ensure data integrity
  • Reconcile benefits invoices, identify discrepancies, and partner with vendors to drive timely resolution and payment processing
Payroll Administration (Back-Up Support)
  • Serve as the designated back-up to the Senior Payroll Manager, providing coverage during peak cycles, absences, and time-sensitive payroll needs
  • Support biweekly payroll processing in ADP Workforce Now, including timesheet review, deduction validation, and audit checks during back-up coverage
  • Partner with the Senior Payroll Manager to ensure benefits-related payroll inputs (deductions, retirement contributions, leave coding) are accurate and timely
Cross-Functional Partnership & Operations
  • Partner closely with the Director, Total Rewards, the Senior Payroll Manager, People Business Partners, People Operations, Internal Communications, Legal, and Finance to ensure Total Rewards programs are well-coordinated, well-communicated, and well-governed
  • Contribute to the development of clear documentation, employee-facing communications, and internal playbooks that build sustainable, scalable Total Rewards processes
  • Demonstrate fair, ethical, and equitable business practices; handle sensitive and confidential information with the utmost discretion and integrity
  • Demonstrate a commitment to fostering and maintaining an environment of inclusion and belonging, modeling Trevor's values in everyday interactions and operational initiatives
  • Approach all work and interactions with empathy and inclusion, to create relationships with teams and individuals at all levels, working closely with colleagues to brainstorm ideas, discuss pros/cons, and develop ways forward, listening and responding to develop mutual understanding and trust
  • Communicate clearly - both in written and verbal form - for internal audiences, distilling complex information into compelling, easily digestible narratives; conveying information around policies, legal and compliance considerations, and best practices in a way that is understood by staff at all levels
  • Work collaboratively with relevant external partners
  • Maintaining knowledge competency relating to The Trevor Project’s programs, services, and strategic goals, as well as the LGBTQ+ community we serve
  • Handle matters with regard for cultural, operational, and legal considerations
  • Learn eagerly, share knowledge appropriately, and improve continuously
  • Demonstrate successful planning and problem-solving skills, including multitasking and working well within tight timelines
  • Demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy in all work
  • Handle other relevant duties and responsibilities as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of progressive experience administering employee benefits and compensation programs, including health insurance, retirement plans, wellness initiatives, and leave policies
  • Strong working knowledge of ERISA, ACA, FMLA, COBRA, HIPAA, and other federal, state, and local regulations governing benefits and compensation
  • Experience supporting compensation cycles, including market benchmarking, salary surveys, job evaluations, and pay equity analyses
  • Experience administering leave and accommodations across multiple states, including ADA and mental-health-related accommodations
  • Familiarity with payroll fundamentals and willingness to serve as back-up to a Senior Manager, Payroll; hands-on payroll processing experience is a plus but not required
  • Experience working with benefits providers, brokers, and external consultants to evaluate, implement, and continuously improve benefits offerings
  • Ability to administer and communicate benefits and compensation programs with an emphasis on inclusivity, accessibility, equity, and employee wellbeing
  • Ability to analyze benefits and compensation data, identify trends, and translate findings into clear recommendations
  • Ability to explain complex benefits and pay information in a clear, empathetic, and engaging manner to employees at all levels
  • Experience with HRIS and benefits administration platforms (ADP Workforce Now experience preferred)
  • Experience operating within a unionized environment, including 24/7 shift-based staff
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong emotional intelligence, integrity, discretion, and ability to build trust across diverse teams and stakeholders
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering inclusive, equitable, and mission-aligned workplace practices
  • Professional proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Experience supporting Total Rewards within global or internationally distributed organizations is preferred
  • Spanish language proficiency is a plus
