This job class may contain positions that are security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code §51.215. Applications will be reviewed online by the hiring department. Purpose To perform journey level work in maintaining, repairing and installing plumbing systems that transport water, steam, natural and laboratory gasses, sewer, storm and drain water, chilled water, vacuum systems and related equipment and distribution systems. Responsibilities Inspects, maintains, repairs, modifies, installs, and replaces building, laboratory, and other miscellaneous plumbing systems. Uses common piping materials such as copper, brass, black steel pipe, galvanized iron, cast iron, polyvinyl chloride, chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, etc. (20%) Locates and repairs leaks in common and specialty piping systems conveying various fluids and gases, including but not limited to domestic water, reclaimed water, wastewater, steam, laboratory gases, natural gas, and refrigerants. Various pipe sizes to 10 inches in diameter and pressures ranging up to 150 pounds per square inch. (20%) Performs preventive maintenance on building, laboratory and specialty plumbing systems and system components including pumps and controls. Utilizes instruments such as ultrasonic, temperature sensing, pressure and flow gauges. Includes working on electronic and pneumatic actuated valves, as well as replacing backflow prevention assemblies, and safety eye washes and showers. (20%) Clears drain blockages. Removes and replaces lavatory fixtures. (15%) Assists other technicians as needed in the accomplishment of shop goals related to key performance indicators. Participates in the On-Call program. (10%) Provides timely and courteous customer service, keeps supervisors up-to-date on daily work order status to ensure clear, concise, and necessary communication channels are maintained and customer expectations are met. (5%) Inspects completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements, and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations. (5%) Reads blueprints, works from specifications, and follows instructions, both written and oral. (5%) Perform other related functions as assigned. Work is performed in accordance with normal trade practices and is inspected for conformity to standards, quality and quantity by journey-level employees or supervisor. Attends staff meetings, safety training and meetings. Drive University vehicles. Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy: UTS157 Section 2.5.4. Required to carry University cell phone. Required Qualifications High school graduation or GED. Three years of experience as a journey level plumber. Licensed as a Journey Level Plumber from the State of Texas Board of Plumbing Examiners or able to achieve this level of licensure within 180 days. License must be maintained as a condition of continued employment. Demonstrated excellent communication skills. Demonstrated ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Demonstrated ability to adhere to safety rules and regulations. Preferred Qualifications Graduation from an accredited apprenticeship program or technical school. More than three years experience as a journey level plumber. Four years industrial plumbing experience related to the functions listed. Licensed as a Master Plumber in the State of Texas. Licensed as a Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester. Licensed as a Customer Service Inspector. Experience at the University of Texas or in a university setting. Experience in more than one craft or trade. Demonstrated ability to work well within a team environment. Demonstrated excellent customer service skills. Demonstrated stable work history. Working knowledge of computerized systems. Ability to read and understand technical manuals and blueprints related to trade. Ability to write reports summarizing work activities. Successful completion of the Leader Development Program. Essential personnel must maintain contact with their supervisor and report to work as regularly scheduled unless directed otherwise. Required to operate an electronic device such as an iPhone, iPad, or laptop / desktop computer to perform and fulfill time reporting and work management requirements. Work management requirements include receiving work assignments, updating work orders, and other functions as required. May be required to work in confined spaces, manholes, tunnels, elevated work, extended shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays. Considerable walking, standing, squatting, stooping, and moving of heavy materials and equipment in all weather conditions. May be required to use of personal protective equipment (PPE) while performing duties. May be exposed to loud noise, high dust and allergen levels. May be required to lift up to 50lbs. Often required to twist, grasp, push, pull and bend. May be required to operate forklifts, personnel lifts and cranes. Operate job related equipment. May require tuberculosis screening and occasional use of a respirator. Drive University vehicles. Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy: UTS157 Section 2.5.4. Participate in on-call program. Work Shift 40 hours a week, five 8-hour days, or possible four 10-hour days with schedule to be determined with supervisor. Some overtime, evening, weekends, and holidays possible.
