Medical Laboratory TechnicianThe Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) / Medical Laboratory Scientist (MT) is responsible for obtaining, processing, and analyzing patient specimens to generate accurate laboratory data used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. This role ensures compliance with established laboratory policies, quality standards, and regulatory requirements. It involves identifying results that require referral to the Pathologist while providing professional, patient-centered service. The MLT/MT obtains, receives, processes, analyzes, and reports accurate laboratory specimen results. They perform laboratory testing in Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Blood Bank, Urinalysis, Blood Gas, and Phlebotomy. This position recognizes abnormal test results and refers critical values to the Pathologist when required. The MLT/MT performs and documents quality control procedures and follows quality assurance guidelines. They screen tests for medical necessity requirements and follow reference laboratory and interface protocols. The position also requires following drug screening and BAT protocols per client-specific requirements. The MLT/MT operates, monitors, and maintains laboratory equipment safely and correctly. Demonstrating competency in phlebotomy for patients of all ages from neonatal to geriatric is essential. Maintaining compliance with infection control practices, universal precautions, and safety regulations is required. The MLT/MT adheres to hospital policies and regulatory requirements including IDPH, OSHA, CMS, HIPAA, and DHHS standards. Completing required education, attending in-services and staff meetings, and reviewing departmental communications is expected. They adapt to changing workloads and complete patient care duties within scheduled shifts. Effective communication with patients, families, providers, and staff is crucial in this role. Confidentiality and ethical standards must always be maintained. The MLT/MT promotes teamwork and organizational values while participating in quality and culture initiatives.
