Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, based on position requirements and successful candidate's qualifications, subject to appropriate authorization.
Additional compensation: Occupational Therapist II's who are Board Certified in Pediatric Specialist shall receive, in addition to their salary, the equivalent of three hundred fourteen dollars (314) monthly (approximately one hundred forty-five dollars (145) bi-weekly).
Open to the public: This recruitment will establish an open eligible list and will be used to fill current and future Occupational Therapist II positions within the Health Care Agency. This eligible list may also be used to fill positions in similar and/or lower classifications throughout the County of Orange.
This position is open to the public and will remain open on a continuous basis until 11:59 p.m. (PST) on the day the County's needs are met.
First round of considerations: The first round of considerations will be on Monday, May 25, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. (PST). Applications received after this date will be processed in the next round. Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply immediately.
Health Care Agency: The County of Orange, Health Care Agency (HCA) is a dynamic organization dedicated to creating and supporting an environment that promotes the achievement of optimal individual, family and community health. Under the direction of the Agency Director, a new and dynamic executive team with an organizational structure comprised of five (5) service areas - Administrative Services, Behavioral Health Services, Correctional Health Services, Specialized Medical Services and Public Health Services - is committed to meeting the health needs of the diverse Orange County community.
The program: The California Children's Services (CCS) provides medically necessary physical and occupational therapy services to children and youths that meet various CCS and Medi-Cal eligibility criteria. The program is managed by the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) and is administered by local county health care departments.
The opportunity: CCS, Medical Therapy Program (MTP) is seeking experienced Occupational Therapists to provide medically necessary physical and occupational therapy services in Medical Therapy Units (MTU) located in public school settings.
Responsibilities of the position will include but are not limited to:
- Provide treatment services for children from birth to 21 years of age with neurological, neuromuscular, and/or complex orthopedic conditions
- Conduct therapeutic evaluations and prepare written reports electronically
- Work collaboratively with other team members to ensure children and their families receive appropriate Durable Medical Equipment (DME) and training to maximize the child's functional abilities
- Complete daily documentation related to treatment sessions in a timely and accurate manner
- Conduct consultations in the home and school settings to support continuity of care and treatment goals
- Attend and participate in Individualized Education Programs (IEP) meetings to support coordinated care and service planning
Based on program needs, the position may be assigned to any of the eleven (11) MTU locations within the county, including Anaheim (2 MTUs), Dana Point, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Irvine, Mission Viejo, Placentia, Santa Ana, Tustin, and Westminster. Reassignment or coverage at other MTUs may also occur as needed.
Minimum qualifications and core competencies:
The ideal candidate will possess at least one (1) or more years of pediatric experience as an Occupational Therapist in a program for physically disabled children.
Additionally, candidates must possess a valid license as an Occupational Therapist issued by the California Board of Occupational Therapy, a California Driver's License, and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate issued by the American Heart Association for professional healthcare providers by date of appointment.
In addition, the ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge, skills, and experience in the following core competencies:
Professional and technical expertise:
- Apply principles, practices, and methods of occupational therapy in the delivery and administration of occupational therapeutic services
- Stay informed on current research, evidence-based practices, and clinical treatment approaches relevant to diagnoses served by the CCS Medical Therapy Program
- Utilize knowledge of skeletal anatomy, kinesiology, neurology, range of motion, muscle testing procedures, and basic pathology involved in neuromuscular and orthopedic disabilities
- Apply current occupational therapy practice and current treatment models and frames of reference for treatment of children with physical disabilities
- Recognize and address the psychological impacts of chronic disability on children's developmental stages, as well as the social and psychological impact on families
- Assess and utilize construction of adaptive equipment and splints and orthotics, and other durable medical equipment to meet patients' medical, functional, and safety needs
- Maintain knowledge of privacy, confidentiality, and compliance requirements including Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) privacy and security rules and regulations
- Effectively design, implement, and evaluate occupational therapy programs tailored to meet each patient's individual needs and treatment goals
- Proficient in using Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
Written and oral communication:
- Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communications skills in interactions with patients, families, staff, and multidiscipline team members
- Maintain frequent and effective communication with supervisors regarding caseload management, patient progress, and service needs
- Prepare clear, accurate, and timely documentation, reports, and correspondence to support treatment planning and coordinated care
Building and maintaining relationships:
- Collaborate and maintain effective working relationships with schools, community programs, specialty clinics, physicians, and therapy colleagues to support coordinated patient care
- Participate in assessment and treatment planning activities as an active member of a multidisciplinary team
- Maintain an open, approachable, and professional demeanor while building positive rapport with patients, families, and colleagues
- Interact with families in a compassionate, supportive, and therapeutic manner to foster trust and encourage positive treatment outcomes
Decision making and self-management:
- Provide competent and appropriate recommendations regarding patient care and treatment planning
- Integrate best practices, clinical knowledge, and information from multiple sources to support informed decision making
- Apply strong critical thinking, sound judgement, and problem-solving skills to determine the most effective course of care for each patient
- Work independently while coordinating multiple responsibilities simultaneously to achieve program objectives
- Demonstrate effective time management and set priorities while managing a diverse and complex workload
- Maintain accurate, timely, and complete records for assigned caseload in accordance with program and regulatory requirements
