Masters Swim Coach

Under the supervision of the Recreation Manager, this position is responsible for instructing program participants in proper development of competitive strokes and skills. The job may require shifts ranging from morning, afternoon and weekends. The Masters Swim Coach is responsible for providing workouts that promote a fun, healthy and social environment for swimmers who are interested in swimming for fitness, participating in triathlons and/or in other adult competitive swimming venues.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist the Recreation Manager in the administration of a comprehensive swimming program by providing a quality competitive environment to train and motivate athletes in the sport of swimming; instruct swim team participants on swimming stroke techniques, race and practice strategy, and physical training regimens. Develop a single and season-long practice and competition plan. Plan, direct, and supervise practices; create varied workouts and be able to teach correct competitive strokes using various swimming techniques, drills and games. Develop team motivation. May provide in-water coaching when deemed necessary and appropriate. Masters Coaches are required to be on-deck for the majority of the workout, but especially for the first 15 minutes when they are greeting swimmers and helping with lane placement. Assist adult swimmers of all levels to improve their swimming skills and aid them in meeting their personal goals. Provide a safe learning environment by educating the participants in safe practices and ensuring all equipment is available, set up, and functioning properly. Provide a positive environment, welcome members, answer questions, and mentor potential new members. Attend and encourage participation for all home and away swim meets. Dispense all program information and provide updates to participants. Prevent accidents through the enforcement of policies and rules governing the conduct of swimming pool patrons; monitor activities in the facilities for individuals who may need assistance or guidance. Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner. Deals with difficult, uncomfortable, and elevated situations in a professional manner. Enter the water to assist people in distress if needed; notify aquatics staff of emergencies. Adhere to facility emergency procedures by analyzing and correcting facility hazards. Attend work on a regular, reliable and punctual basis; subs for co-workers when available; is responsible for securing substitutes for shifts unable to work. Communicates with other Masters coaches through email regarding team matters and scheduling. Provides outstanding customer service and provides information for cross training opportunities with other District programs.

OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Facilitates social opportunities for class/team participants. Facilitates opportunities for swimmers to compete in triathlons and other competitive venues. Communicate participant's needs, requests and suggestions to the Aquatics Management Team. Provide work ethic that promotes the highest degree of professionalism and fosters good working relationships with co-workers and managers. Attends staff meetings and other training as required. Completes other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must be 19 years old. Advanced knowledge of fitness, swimming and nutrition. Ability to clearly communicate with large groups or individuals in a pool setting. Ability to set group and individual fitness goals and provide means and motivation to achieve them. Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with participants. Ability to recognize and respond to emergency situations. Must possess general knowledge of competitive swimming equipment such as: pace clocks, lane ropes, kick boards, pull buoys, hand paddles, fins, snorkels, bungee cords, and timing devices. Six (6) years of competitive swimming in an organized program. Lifeguard/CPR/First-Aid Certification preferred. Or must obtain within 6 months of hire. Preferred: One (1) year of previous masters coaching experience. H.S. Diploma or equivalent.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Working environment will be hot/humid, cool/damp, wet and noisy. 95% of the work is done primarily in a hot, humid environment. During summer months, work may be at an outdoor facility and will include exposure to all types of weather. Exposure to chemically treated water for a minimum of 2 hours per day. Noise levels range from moderate to loud, often due to active children, group interactions, or busy transportation settings. Must be able to work in an environment with poor acoustics and an array of distractions, i.e., music, weather conditions, etc. Requires ability to recognize and respond to sounds/signals of distress.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires ability to sit, stand, knee, crouch, walk and reach with arms for extended periods of time and speak loudly. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday. Ability to work most of the day on your feet, performing both active supervision and hands‑on tasks. Ability to lift 50 lbs. Ability to communicate effectively, including speaking loudly, when necessary, in noisy or outdoor environments. Ability to monitor participants, ensure safety, and respond to signals or emergencies.
