PURPOSE
The Professional Counselor I/II serves the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi community by providing a full continuum of psychological services with a specialized focus on crisis intervention, triage assessment, and alcohol and other drug (AOD) screening and programming. Under general supervision, this position delivers individual and group counseling, comprehensive clinical/triage assessments, clinical supervision, and outreach/consultation.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Functional Area 1: Clinical Services
Percent Effort: 25%
Provide brief individual counseling, consultation, and referrals.
Conduct alcohol and drug screenings and comprehensive substance use assessments.
Facilitate recovery-focused group sessions, psychoeducational classes, and support groups, as assigned.
Maintain accurate/timely documentation in the electronic medical records system.
Participate in biweekly case conferences and informal case consultations for client care coordination.
Functional Area 2: Crisis/Triage Consultation
Percent Effort: 40%
Conduct triage and crisis assessments including de-escalation, safety/risk evaluation, and stabilization planning during daily crisis walk-in hours.
Coordinate referrals to a higher level of care (inpatient hospitalization, intensive outpatient, etc.) as needed.
Follow up with students in crisis to monitor progress and ensure linkage to support.
Functional Area 3: Consultation & Outreach
Percent Effort: 15%
Develop and deliver presentations, workshops, and outreach programs related to mental health, suicide prevention, and AOD issues.
Engage in campus-wide prevention and early intervention efforts.
Serve as liaison and consultant to campus and community partners, including collegiate recovery/programming initiatives.
Provide short-term embedded support services in conjunction with campus programs including occasional weekend and evening programs (e.g., annual university camp for freshman).
Functional Area 4: Program Coordination
Percent Effort: 10%
Coordinate a specialized program area (e.g., AOD, recovery programming, embedded support for specific student population).
Collaborate with campus partners to optimize care coordination and referral pathways.
Functional Area 5: Clinical Supervision
Percent Effort: 10%
Provide clinical supervision to master’s level counseling practicum trainees and interns.
Participate in selection, onboarding, and training of counseling practicum trainees and interns.
QUALIFICATIONS
Professional Counselor I:
Master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or other specialty related to job function.
Practical/field placement relevant to college counseling, or supervised experience related to job function.
Licensed as Licensed Professional Counselor Associate. Must maintain licensure for continued employment.
Professional Counselor II:
Master’s degree in counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or other specialty related to job function.
Texas Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). Must maintain licensure for continued employment.
LPC’s must have completed at least 3000 hours of post-licensure clinical mental health experience in no less than 18 months of supervision. LMFT’s must have completed 3000 clock hours of full-time post-licensure clinical experience in no less than 24 months with 200 hours of supervision. LCSW’s must have completed at least one (1) year of supervised clinical experience with 100 hours of supervision and have passed their state board exam.
OTHER REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Demonstrated experience in brief therapy and/or solution focused therapy with adults in an outpatient setting.
Demonstrated experience assessing and treating a wide variety of clinical conditions.
Demonstrated experience in crisis intervention.
Strong interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written) to be able to effectively collaborate within a multidisciplinary environment and the campus community.
Knowledge and experience with Electronic Medical Records systems
Knowledge and experience with telemental health platforms and providing telemental health services.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Licensed as Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Texas or able to obtain this licensure in Texas within six months of hire if licensed in another state.
Two (2) or more years of post-graduate experience in social work, counseling, or other mental health agency.
Experience providing counseling services as a professional staff member in a university setting.
Experience in assessment and intervention of individuals with serious mental health concerns and/or a history of trauma.
Demonstrated program development and coordination skills.
Advanced clinical training and experience in specialized area (e.g., trauma, eating disorders, OCD, AOD)
Advanced clinical training, experience and certification in an evidence-based therapy modality (e.g., EMDR, DBT, ACT, CBT).
Experience providing clinical supervision to master’s level counseling and psychology trainees utilizing a multiculturally competent approach.
SALARY: $49,000 – $60,000/annually, approximately
$4,083.34 - $5,000/monthly
Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
NOTE: Employment may be impacted by the Presidential proclamation issued on September 19, 2025 and the moratorium issued by Texas Governor Abbott on January 27, 2026.
