Police Cadet Position
The City is sponsoring eligible candidates through the Police Academy. The purpose of this position is to prepare a non-certified applicant (Police Cadet) to receive the necessary training and education through The Law Enforcement Basic Recruit Training (Police Academy) to become a prospective Police Officer. The Police Academy prepares the cadet to become an entry-level law enforcement officer in the State of Florida. Employees in this classification perform practical skills and simulated activities that complement the classroom instruction. This minimum standards program is regulated by the Florida statutes and is a highly structured and disciplined program. Upon successful completion of the Basic Training Program, a cadet is eligible to take the Florida Department of Law Enforcement State Officer Certification exam. This position is under the general supervision of the Chief of Police or designee. Performs other duties as assigned.
The following knowledge, skills, and abilities, as outlined herein, are intended to be representative of the type of tasks performed within this position. - Attends all required courses at the Police Academy.
- While at the Police Academy, Cadets are supervised by Academy Staff and required to perform any related duties the Academy deems necessary.
- Required to complete the Florida Law Enforcement Basic Recruit training (Florida Police Academy) in an effort to become eligible to take the state of Florida Department of Law Enforcement State Officer Certification exam.
- Performs routine office functions such as filing, faxing, answering phones, and copying.
- Performs related duties as directed.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum age of 19 years.
- Must be United States Citizen at time of application.
- Must have High School Diploma or equivalent. An evaluation of foreign high school diploma may be required.
- Must not have been convicted of any felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement as an adult. Must have good moral character as determined by a background investigation.
- If ever arrested, must submit an official court disposition with the application. Official court dispositions can be obtained from the Clerk of the Court in the county in which the incident occurred.
- Must successfully pass the Basic Abilities Test (CJBAT or FBAT). If not completed by the time of application, applicants must have their Basic Abilities Test scheduled by the date of their interview. The Basic Abilities Test is not required for non-certified applicants with Associate's degree or higher.
- Must successfully pass the Physical Agility Test. The Physical Agility Test must be completed at Broward College Institute of Public Safety Testing Center. If not completed by the time of application, applicants must have their Physical Agility Test scheduled at Broward College Institute of Public Safety Testing Center by the date of their interview. Additional Requirements/Environmental Factors
Schedule Requirements: The ability to work eighty-four (84) hours per pay period, 12-hour shifts, weekends, and holidays.
Driving Requirements: The ability to drive and operate a personal or City vehicle for extended periods of time, including utilization as field office; and to enter and exit the vehicle various times throughout the day.
Physical Requirements: The ability to exert extremely heavy physical effort in very heavy work, which may involve some combination of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and/or lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials in excess of 100 pounds.
Motor Coordination: The ability to coordinate eyes, hands, and feet to utilize and operate City vehicles, tools, equipment, and machinery.
Sensory Requirements: The ability to perceive and differentiate audio and/or visual cues or signals; and to perceive and differentiate depths, and/or textures.
Form/Spatial Aptitude: The ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape; and to visually read various information.
Color Discrimination: The ability to differentiate between colors or shades of color.
Communication: The ability to effectively communicate with City employees, stakeholders, and the general public verbally and/or in writing as needed to exchange information, coordinate work activities, and resolve matters.
Functional Reasoning: The ability to apply principles of rational systems, such as motivation, incentive, and leadership; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
Situational Reasoning: The ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness, and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental, measurable, verifiable, or subjective criteria.

Environmental Factors: Essential functions are performed with varied exposure to adverse environmental conditions (i.e. cold, heat, rain, sunlight, humidity, noise, dirt, odor, fumes, disease, pathogens, traffic hazards, animals, wildlife, violence, and/or explosives).
