The Middle School Content Specialist is responsible for leading their department to improve student achievement by building capacity to analyze achievement data. They ensure accelerated and enriched instruction and intervention support is available for all students, collaborate with teachers within departments and across teams, and observe teachers to provide coaching and support. They play an active role in building and sustaining a community of learners, and must be a certified teacher in their content area(s). Physical demands are as required by the duties, and the position requires attendance at school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day, as mandated by the MCEA agreement. Ensure accelerated and enriched instruction and intervention support is available for all students. Collaborate with teachers within departments and across teams to coordinate the instructional program. Observe teachers and assist them in improving teaching and learning. Support the implementation of the instructional program. Provide professional development and feedback to teachers. Collect and analyze formative and summative data sources. Coordinate and lead instructional staff meetings and committee work. Assist in preparing curriculum and assessment materials. Actively participate in community of learners and instructional initiatives. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Thorough knowledge of curriculum, assessment, and instruction for middle school students. Understanding of the middle school child and the ability to work well with students, teachers, and administrators. Exemplary teaching skills and proficiency in providing professional development. Outstanding facilitation, organizational, and supervisory skills. Strong technology skills. Excellent oral and written communication, collaboration, and feedback skills. Ability to collect and analyze data from formative and summative sources. Knowledge and application of the six performance standards established for the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS). Education, Training & Experience Master’s degree (or equivalent) from an accredited institution, or within one year of completing this requirement. Completion of OAT 1 by the beginning of the second year of assignment and OAT 2 by the end of the second year. Minimum of three years of outstanding teaching experience, with one year in MCPS preferred. Appropriate middle school teaching experience within the subject fields of the department. Demonstrated skill in working effectively with people. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience that provide the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills may be considered. Selection, Continuance & Evaluation Selection: By the principal and a team that includes teachers from the content department; achievement of lead teacher status may be required when the career lattice is implemented.
