Middle School Content Specialist Overview The Middle School Content Specialist is responsible for leading the department, building capacity to analyze achievement data for improved instruction, ensuring accelerated and enriched instruction and intervention support for all students, and contributing to a community of learners. The specialist is an exemplary teacher with a proven record of increasing student achievement, supports the implementation of instructional programs, observes teachers to improve practice, and coordinates instruction and collaboration among teachers within and across departments. Responsibilities Lead the department in analyzing achievement data to inform instruction. Ensure accelerated and enriched instruction and intervention support is available for all students. Support the implementation of the instructional program and observe teachers to assist them in improving teaching and learning. Coordinate the instructional program and facilitate collaboration among teachers within departments and across teams. Attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the MCEA agreement. Maintain appropriate certification in the specialist’s content area (Arts/PE specialists must hold certification in the specified area). Receive additional time and compensation for the additional responsibilities. Qualifications Master’s degree from an accredited institution or within one year of completion. OAT 1 by the beginning of the second year and OAT 2 by the end of the second year in assignment. Minimum of three years of outstanding teaching experience, with at least one year in MCPS preferred. Appropriate middle school teaching experience within subject fields of the department. Must hold mandatory Maryland State Department of Education certification for the appropriate content area. Must have strong knowledge of curriculum, assessment, and instruction; understanding of middle school students; exemplary teaching skills; facilitation, organizational, and supervisory skills; skill in providing professional development and feedback to teachers; strong technology skills; strong data collection and analysis skills; excellent oral and written communication and collaboration skills. Ability to apply the six performance standards of the Montgomery County Public Schools Teacher Professional Growth System. Selection and Continuance of Service The specialist will be selected by the principal and a team that includes teachers from the content department. The position will be evaluated using the Teacher Professional Growth System standards. Compensation and Benefits Salary range: $64,591 – $131,472 (based on education and experience).
