SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION
At the direction of the principal, the paraeducator promotes student learning and well‑being to support students with Individualized Education Programs (IEP). Duties include providing academic, behavioral, social, emotional, and physical support, attending to personal care and medical needs, responding to students who may display physical or verbal aggression, and accompanying students in learning activities off school grounds. Focus on facilitating mastery of grade‑level curriculum or Alternate Academic Achievement Standards. Supports teachers and staff in all classrooms or special instructional settings.PHYSICAL & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Frequent bending, walking, kneeling, running, and lifting of objects/equipment up to 50 lb. Outside duty, flexible scheduling, change of location/ program as needed. Specialized training in alignment with assignment special education services to be completed within 6 months.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of child development, instructional strategies, and policies of Montgomery County Public Schools. Ability to assist in implementing the instructional program and monitor student behavior. Patient, effective with children, young adults, and staff. Follow written and verbal instructions, complete required tasks. Effective verbal and written communication in English. Support students with special needs. Basic computer skills – Google Workspace, MS Office, web‑based instructional tools. Quickly learn and meet SSPGS core competencies.EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
Associate’s degree required; Bachelor’s degree preferred. College coursework minimum of nine credit‑hours related to education (behavior management, instructional strategies). One year of experience with students in structured educational settings preferred. Alternatives: 48 college credits + two years in a structured setting. Two years in a structured setting + successful ParaPro Assessment (qualifying score ≥455). Other combinations considered if they demonstrate necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
