The New Mexico Department of Information Technology is the state's central IT agency, responsible for delivering enterprise technology services, cybersecurity, broadband initiatives, network infrastructure, and support for statewide public safety communications.


The Communications Department supports the agency by managing internal and external communications, producing clear and consistent messaging, coordinating public information efforts, and assisting with outreach related to statewide technology initiatives. It operates within the Office of the Secretary to ensure alignment with departmental priorities.

Why does the job exist?

The Communications Intern position is needed to provide essential support to the department's growing communications workload. Currently, the Communications Office is staffed by a single employee, and the volume of tasks ¿ content development, internal and external messaging, social media support, event coordination, and document preparation, has increased significantly. Adding an intern will ensure timely completion of routine and foundational tasks, such as drafting simple content, organizing materials, maintaining tracking systems, and assisting with day-to-day communication needs. This support will improve efficiency, help maintain consistent departmental communications, and allow the Communications Director to focus on higher-level strategic responsibilities.


How does it get done?

* Assist in drafting and editing content for internal communication, newsletters, announcements, and website updates.
* Support the creation and scheduling of social media posts, including gathering information and preparing graphics or captions.
* Help maintain communication calendars, track ongoing projects, and organize materials for campaigns or initiatives.
* Participate in preparing meeting notes, summaries, and documentation for communications-related discussions.
* Conduct basic research to support communication materials, such as background information for announcements or reports.
* Assist in coordinating events, presentations, or outreach activities as needed.
* Update or organize digital files, media assets, and communication resources.
* Collaborate with team members, follow project instructions, and contribute ideas during planning sessions.
* Uphold brand, style, and accessibility guidelines across all communication materials.

Ideal Candidate

* Strong written and verbal communication skills¿ Ability to draft clear, concise content for internal and external audiences

Minimum Qualification

Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university OR completion of at least four (4) semesters (or equivalent) at an accredited college or university within the last two (2) years.


Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain current ID or Driver's License. Pre-employment background investigation is required, and employment is conditional pending results.


Working Conditions

Work takes place primarily in an office environment at DoIT's central office in the Simms building in Santa Fe. Employees routinely engage with computers, mobile devices, and phone systems, handling tasks such as document processing, email and application support, and frequent virtual or in-person meetings.
