Integrated Photonics Summer PhD Intern

Overview HyperLight is looking for an Integrated Photonics Summer PhD Intern. This role focuses on the measurement and testing of photonic products at chip, module, and system levels. It involves improving test capabilities, building new test functionalities and setups, and contributing to next‑generation products. Benefits Hands‑on experience in a cutting‑edge photonics environment Mentorship and collaboration with leading photonics experts Opportunity to contribute to impactful projects shaping the future of photonics technologies Market‑competitive compensation of $25‑$35 per hour Responsibilities Perform optical and electrical testing of integrated photonic devices and systems Improve test capabilities by building new test functionalities and setups Assist in optimizing test protocols to enhance efficiency and accuracy Drive R&D to improve product performance (optical, RF, electro‑optical) Analyze and interpret experimental data to validate device performance and identify areas for improvement Collaborate with cross‑functional teams, including design and fabrication, to address performance challenges Requirements Current Ph.D. or Master’s student in a photonics related field (Physics, Optics, Engineering, etc.) Strong understanding of integrated photonics, silicon photonics, or related technologies Experience with electro‑optical modulators is a plus Familiarity with fiber alignment systems and free‑space optics setups is a plus Proficiency in data analysis using Python, MATLAB, or equivalent tools Experience with photonic device simulation tools (e.g., Lumerical, COMSOL) is a plus Strong written and oral communication skills Ability to work under time constraints Ability to solve problems in new and/or ambiguous scenarios Duration and Location 12‑week or longer full‑time internship during summer/fall (year‑round internship also available) In‑person location in Cambridge, MA Pay range of $25‑$35 per hour Authorization to work in the United States is required.
