Description: A Surgical Technician is an individual with knowledge and expertise in operating room technology. They are responsible for assisting in the performance of routine and delegated functions under the direct supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse. The Surgical Technician performs scrub assignments according to established guidelines. They apply principles and practices of asepsis. They perform surgical scrub, gowning, and gloving procedures. They set up the sterile instrument table and prepare supplies according to the type of operation. They assist in draping the patient and operative area according to need. They anticipate the needs of the surgeon for instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies. They observe the patient and are ready for emergencies. They maintain the correct count of sponges, needles, and instruments with the circulating nurse. They report discrepancies according to established policy and procedure. They maintain and monitor aseptic technique at all times. They institute corrective measures in the event of contamination. They assist in the care, handling, and disposition of specimens according to policy. They assist in the application of dressings and in securing drainage systems. They assist in moving the patient using an approved transfer device. They discard soiled materials in the appropriate receptacle. They place approved instruments for reprocessing in the appropriate bin. They decontaminate all equipment, instruments, and reusable supplies. They clean the room as prescribed. They assist the Registered Professional Nurse in performing circulating functions according to established guidelines. They assemble and make available all necessary supplies according to patient and surgical procedure requirements. They provide special equipment before, during, and after the surgical procedure as needed. They observe and protect the patient by correct positioning and application of restraint. They ensure strict aseptic practice and maintain an aseptic environment. They position the patient and adjust the table and accessories as required for the procedure. They follow OSHA guidelines by using appropriate PPE in the surgical suite. They prepare the operative area and assist in draping as directed. They assist the scrub nurse in maintaining correct sponge, needle, and instrument counts. They report discrepancies to the surgical team and charge nurse. They complete operative counts and related records accurately and legibly. They observe personnel in the room continuously and control traffic. They report and correct breaks in aseptic technique promptly. They maintain and care for all specimens to prevent loss or damage. They assist in the application of dressings and move the patient to the recovery room as directed. They assist in room clean-up and make preparations for the next procedure. They assist in preparing medications or solutions to be administered during surgery under the supervision of the Registered Professional Nurse. They mix medicated solutions at the sterile field only as directed. They label all medications that are not already labeled. They announce in an audible voice the name, concentration, amount, and route of administration of medications. They do not dispense narcotics or controlled drugs under any circumstances. They perform functions to assist in meeting operational needs. They assist in the transportation of patients to and from the surgical suite as directed. They notify of changes in par levels and any changes in instrumentation or equipment specific to the unit. They assist in keeping operating rooms and sterile storage areas organized. They assist in updating preference cards as needed. They must be able to read, write, understand, and speak English clearly. They should have visual and aural acuity to assess patients within job responsibilities. They must possess communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with a wide variety of individuals. They should be oriented to consumer satisfaction. They need physical stamina and dexterity to perform various tasks and skills in the area of assignment. Preferred education includes courses in operating room technology, science, biology, and chemistry. Prior experience in an operating room setting is preferred.
