Step down unit Registered Nurse RN

TriCities Hospital, part of the HCA Virginia Health System, is seeking a compassionate and skilled Step Down Unit Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Healthcare & Medical Services team. In this role, you will provide high-quality, evidence-based care to acutely ill and medically complex adult patients who require a higher level of monitoring than a general medical‑surgical floor, but who are stable enough to be managed outside the intensive care unit. Working in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment, you will assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care, using advanced clinical judgment and critical thinking skills to respond quickly to changes in patient condition. As a Step Down RN at TriCities Hospital, you will perform comprehensive patient assessments, monitor vital signs and telemetry, manage multiple IV infusions, administer medications safely, and provide ongoing education and emotional support to patients and their families. You will coordinate care with physicians, advanced practice providers, respiratory therapists, case managers, and other interdisciplinary team members to ensure safe transitions of care and optimal patient outcomes. You will also play a key role in recognizing early signs of patient deterioration, initiating appropriate rapid responses, and escalating care when necessary. You will document accurately and timely in the electronic medical record, follow all hospital policies and clinical protocols, and participate in quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient safety, outcomes, and satisfaction. RNs in this unit are expected to maintain strong communication skills, delegate appropriately to nursing assistants and other support staff, and foster a culture of teamwork, respect, and accountability.
