Outpatient Senior Nurse Practitioner - Neurosurgery

Overview The University of Maryland Faculty Physicians, Inc. is seeking an Outpatient Nurse Practitioner for the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Responsibilities The Senior NP will play a pivotal role in the preoperative and postoperative management of neurosurgical patients in the outpatient setting, delivering high-quality, patient-centered care, as well as contributing to the success of our clinical programs. Manage patients across two neurosurgical subspecialties, the Functional Program and the Brain Tumor Program, including intracranial pathologies such as brain tumors and other neoplasms, and patients evaluated or treated for functional neurosurgical disorders (e.g., Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, epilepsy). Assess, coordinate diagnostic workups, perform perioperative optimization, provide longitudinal follow-up care, and educate patients and families. Collaborate with surgical, oncology, neurology, and allied health teams to ensure continuity and excellence in care. Act as a key stakeholder in the success of the programs, supporting quality improvement initiatives and helping drive strategic goals. Coordinate care delivery processes, monitor performance metrics, foster team communication, and serve as a liaison between staff, leadership, and external partners. Participate in mentoring activities and precept students; promote understanding of disease processes in the area of specialty/program; function as a clinical resource for interns, residents, fellows, nurses, and medical students. Provide community education, health promotion and outreach; act as a community health resource for the specialty. Work with physician leaders and administration to achieve service-specific outcome targets for key metrics including clinical outcomes, length of stay, cost of care, and patient satisfaction. Participate in performance improvement activities to improve clinical outcomes and minimize variation; develop clinical pathways in collaboration with physician leadership and the multidisciplinary team; participate in and lead quality assurance activities (e.g., chart reviews, peer review) and establish standard of practice. Education and/or Experience Master of Science Degree with completion of a primary care Nurse Practitioner program. Registered and currently licensed with the Maryland Board of Examiners of Nurses as a Certified Nurse Practitioner in the State of Maryland. Certified in area of specialty. (Copy of written agreement with physician signed by the physician and nurse practitioner and written approval by the Joint Committee for Nurse Practitioners pursuant to COMAR 10.27.07.06A.) DEA and CDS eligible CPR required BLS required ACLS and/or other relevant certifications as required by the department Three years experience as a Nurse Practitioner is required Demonstrated ability to promote professionalism through involvement in professional organizations, teaching, research, publishing, and/or certification in area of specialty Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population served; knowledge of growth and development principles across the lifespan and ability to assess data reflective of patient requirements by population and age Highly effective verbal and written communication skills for interactions with patient families, departmental units, medical and nursing staff Maintains updated mandatory training Updates immunizations as recommended per practice area Benefits / Total Rewards The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of the University of Maryland Faculty Physicians Inc. salary range for this position. Some candidates will not be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will depend on multiple factors including geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, internal equity, responsibility factor and span of control, education/training and other qualifications.
