Major Responsibilities Demonstrate independent proficiency in the scrub role in all cases in the assigned specialty, providing high‑quality, evidence‑based clinical care with minimal supervision. Promote teamwork by precepting co‑workers. Prepare the Operating Room for cases, selecting and checking carts and preference cards for correct instrument sets, packs, sterile supplies, and additional items needed. Anticipate the need for special equipment and supplies before the procedure, request them from the circulating nurse, set up the back table and Mayo tray according to surgeon preference, and perform the surgical count with the circulating nurse per UMMMC policy. Respond to the needs of the surgeon and other team members, assisting the operative team and anticipating special equipment or supplies during cases. Remain observant of the operative field, recognize emergency situations, and perform emergency procedures as directed. Utilize a variety of OR equipment such as microscopes, CUSA, steam sterilizers, suction, compressed air/gas, etc. Pass and track instruments, sutures, and supplies during procedures; label all medication and solutions on the sterile field; monitor sponges, needles, and instruments; care for specimens to prevent loss or damage; and use caution when handling specimens to ensure proper anatomical identification. Position Qualifications License/Certification/Education Successful completion of an accredited surgical technology school and certification as a surgical technologist by the time of hire. All Surgical Technologist Certified employees must hold a credential administered by a nationally recognized certifying body accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies and recognized by the American College of Surgeons and the Association of Surgical Technologists. Maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification every two years and keep AST membership, required educational units, and AST certification up to date. Experience/Skills Thorough knowledge of a specialized and technical field of Surgical Technology.
