Marine Camp Counselor, Sea Explorers Camp - Babylon, NY

Overview This seasonal position will assist with a marine science summer camp for children ages 6–14. The camp counselor will serve as a marine educator and supervisor for campers, working with the Assistant Camp Director to oversee a designated group of 10 campers and support the implementation of daily activities. Responsibilities Lead children through indoor and outdoor activities during expeditions to Cedar Beach (Oceanside). Create and teach one lesson each week. Participate in seining and water activities at Cedar Beach Marina. Guide arts, crafts, and games sessions. Prepare, conduct, and break down daily crafts and activity stations. Delegate tasks to CITs as appropriate. Prepare before programs and clean up afterwards, including cleaning and caring for the facility, marine, and freshwater tanks. Supervise a small group of children and coordinate with CIT participants. Required Qualifications Graduation or attendance in/from a recognized high school or equivalent. Experience working with children. Ability to learn and lead educational experiences and activities. Ability to understand and carry out educational program tasks and objectives. Ability to supervise a small group of children. Ability to supervise CIT participants. Ability to understand and implement written and oral instructions. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to work outdoors performing various types of educational and physical activities. Ability to learn marine science and natural science subject matter. Ability to work with and touch live animals (marine organisms, fish, reptiles, etc.). Ability to handle health and safety issues and/or emergency situations. Physical ability for light hiking expeditions to Cedar Beach and Cedar Beach Marina seining. Ability to communicate with camp participants’ parents. Flexible scheduling of work week as required by ongoing operations. Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position. Ability to meet acceptable background check standards, if required. Ability to work flexible hours. Preferred Qualifications Desire to work with children. Basic marine biology, environmental or education background/aquarium and/or animal care experience. Current CPR/AED and/or First Aid certification or higher, or equivalent. Lifeguard certifications. Special Requirements Over 18 years of age. Experience working with children and animals (sea creatures, reptiles, etc.). Background in life science/biology. Transportation to/from site. CPR and/or life guarding certification is a plus. Position Details Non‑Exempt: Seasonal. Hours: 30–32 hours per week. Salary: $17.00–$18.50 per hour (based on qualifications).
