Carpenter / Concrete Worker / Steel Erector

Join a commercial construction team that delivers projects ranging from $1 million to $15 million, including remodels and new buildings within a 60-mile radius of Ames and Fort Dodge. In this role, you will perform a wide variety of construction tasks such as demolition, earthwork, concrete placement and finishing, framing, and steel erection, contributing to high-quality commercial projects from start to finish.

Responsibilities

• Perform a full range of construction activities, including demolition work, earthwork, and excavations to prepare job sites for new construction and remodels.
• Place, finish, and cure concrete for slabs, foundations, and other structural elements according to project specifications.
• Prepare and interpret layouts, measurements, and markings to ensure accurate placement of structures and components.
• Erect framework for structures, including walls, floors, roofs, and other building elements using carpentry and framing techniques.
• Install ceilings and walls, including rough and finish carpentry tasks, to meet structural and aesthetic requirements.
• Perform welding and steel erection tasks, including assembling and securing steel components, as needed on commercial projects.
• Signal equipment operators to guide the movement and placement of materials and machinery safely and efficiently.
• Use and maintain basic hand tools such as tool pouches, hammers, tape measures, speed squares, and utility knives on a daily basis.
• Work flexibly across different construction disciplines, taking on carpentry, concrete, steel, or other tasks depending on project needs.
• Collaborate with crews of 3–10 team members on job sites, supporting a safe, efficient, and cooperative work environment.
• Follow safety procedures, site rules, and project plans to ensure quality workmanship and compliance with regulations.
• Adapt to working in various outdoor conditions and on multiple commercial job sites within the designated geographic area.

Essential Skills

• At least 2 years of carpentry experience, residential or commercial, including rough and/or finish carpentry.
• Minimum 2 years of overall construction experience performing tasks such as framing, concrete work, or related trades.
• Ability to perform concrete placement and finishing tasks or willingness to learn under supervision.
• Ability to read and follow layouts, measurements, and basic construction drawings.
• Capability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly throughout the workday.
• Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and on active construction sites.
• Valid driver's license with reliable transportation to travel to job sites within a 60-mile radius of Ames and Fort Dodge.
• Proficiency with basic hand tools such as tool pouches, hammer, tape measure, speed square, and utility knife.
• Willingness to perform different types of construction tasks as needed on a job site.
• Strong teamwork skills and ability to work effectively in crews of varying sizes.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in commercial construction environments, including work on institutional or large-scale projects.
• Prior experience as a concrete finisher, framer, or carpenter on commercial or residential projects.
• Welding or steel erection experience on structural steel components.
• Comfort with both rough and finish carpentry tasks.
• Interest in developing leadership skills for future field or office roles.

Work Environment

This role is based in a commercial construction environment, working on projects such as remodels and new buildings within approximately a 60-mile radius of Ames and Fort Dodge. You will typically work in crews of 3 to 10 people on active job sites, collaborating closely with teammates and equipment operators. Standard hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with work performed primarily outdoors or in partially enclosed structures. The role requires working in various weather conditions and on different types of terrain and structures. Typical attire includes boots, jeans, and a t-shirt or sweatshirt, suitable for a hands-on construction setting, along with the use of basic hand tools and appropriate personal protective equipment as required by the job site.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Ames, IA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $25.00/hr.
