College Advisor (5155C), Rausser College of Natural Resources 86932 Position Summary The position involves a wide range of student services duties and responsibilities for an academic department/school/college or organization. Provides assistance to the dean/chair, faculty, and students in academic advising, recruitment, admissions, student orientation and events, career counseling, and related programs. This open position is responsible for advising students in the Environmental Sciences major. Responsibilities Academic Advising (75%): Apply professional student services concepts to support undergraduates in identifying, defining, and obtaining their educational goals. Advise students on majors and preparation for careers and graduate work. Develop and maintain thorough knowledge of College and University policies, rules, and regulations. Through scheduled advising appointments, drop‑in advising hours, email communications, workshops, and presentations, engage and build relationships with students to maximize their experience at UC Berkeley. Empower students through holistic, high‑touch, collaborative advising to achieve their own definition of academic and personal success. Advise students on a wide range of course possibilities and ways to complete complicated degree requirements. Educate students on academic and nonacademic opportunities such as study abroad, internships, undergraduate research, scholarships, and extracurricular activities. Highlight Rausser College opportunities such as the Sponsored Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR), Summer Internship Grant, Peer Advising Leadership Program, Honor Research Program, and Conference Grant. Assess and monitor students’ academic progress to ensure timely declaration of major, adherence to College policies, and advancement to degree. Track academic progress in CalCentral’s Academic Progress Report, place registration holds as needed, explain registration and enrollment procedures and policies, support students under Academic Review, review petitions for exception to College policies or major requirements, and verify completion of degree requirements. Counsel students experiencing complex problems resulting in academic and personal difficulties. Collaborate with students to identify barriers contributing to academic decline and/or disengagement as well as personal strengths and community resources to overcome obstacles. Provide referrals to campus partners such as Counseling and Psychological Services, Disabled Students Program, Path to Care, Student Learning Center, Educational Opportunity Program, and Basic Needs Center. Internal and External Relations (10%): Serve as a representative of the Rausser College Office of Instruction & Student Affairs and provide information, clarification, and interpretation of College policy. Collaborate with other university offices (e.g., Admissions, Registrar, University Health Services, Disabled Students Program, New Student Services, Financial Aid and Scholarships, Summer Session) and consult and refer students experiencing academic, financial, and personal difficulties. Assist in joint ventures with campus partners and external groups, such as community colleges. Participate in special programs and projects directly related to the mission of the office. Student Services Support (10%): Provide assistance and support to Senior Advisors, Assistant Director, and Assistant Dean on high‑profile events such as Golden Bear Orientation, Cal Day, and Commencement and student services programming such as the Honors Symposium, Research Showcase, ES Symposium, and Peer Advisor Leadership training. Professional Development (5%): Maintain and update working knowledge of advising, counseling, student affairs administration by participating in campus organizations, networking with peers, and attending professional association meetings. Train through appropriate classes and workshops related to advising, counseling, student affairs, and university requirements. Required Qualifications Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Knowledge of and/or ability to learn University‑specific computer application programs and pertinent databases. Ability to multitask; verbal and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills. Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations. Ability in problem identification and reasoning. Skills in service orientation, organization, active listening, and critical thinking. Knowledge of and/or ability to learn University processes and procedures. Knowledge of and/or ability to understand University rules and regulations. Basic computer skills. Education / Training Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $26.92 – $34.08. This is a non‑exempt, bi‑weekly paid position.
