HS Cadet Emergency Services Instructor – EMT Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) Public Safety Training Academy (PSTA) is a premier training facility dedicated to preparing firefighters, emergency medical technicians (EMTs), and paramedics for modern emergency response. The High School Cadet program aims to prepare 11th and 12th grade students for careers with MCFRS by offering entry‑level classes, high‑school credit, and a structured hiring process to become full‑time employees. The salary range for this position is $67,672 to $102,385 , based on qualifications and experience. Responsibilities Develop and deliver lessons and evaluation tools based on curriculum learning objectives. Provide didactic and practical instruction in EMT. Plan and coordinate training and educational activities. Prepare and deliver courses for the HS Cadet Program at the Training Academy. Guide, evaluate, and mentor students during classroom and hands‑on training sessions. Develop and implement learner remediation plans in collaboration with the high‑school cadet coordinator. Work under routine deadlines, managing multiple projects and instructional schedules efficiently. Collaborate with instructional staff (uniformed and civilian) to develop and enhance course offerings. Demonstrate thorough knowledge of Fire/Rescue service delivery within an all‑hazards Fire/Rescue department setting. Apply adult learning methodologies and competency‑based education principles to instruction. Maintain strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and teamwork while working closely with colleagues and stakeholders. Minimum Qualifications Age: Twenty‑one (21) years or older. Experience: Three (3) years of experience, either paid or volunteer, in fire suppression and/or emergency medical services (EMS). Education: High‑school graduation, high‑school certificate of completion recognized in Maryland, or a high‑school equivalency diploma. License: Valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver’s license from the applicant’s state of residence appropriate to the equipment operated. Training and Certifications Applicants must have completed the following courses: Instructor I Course, consistent with NFPA 1041, Level 1 requirements or equivalent. Human Relations Training consistent with Montgomery County requirements or equivalent. Practical Rescue training course consistent with Montgomery County Practical Rescue course or equivalent. Continuation requires the ability to obtain and maintain Maryland Instructor Certification Review Board (MICRB) certification as an Emergency Services Instructor in the assigned discipline. American Heart Association CPR Instructor. State of Maryland Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)*. Provide and maintain MICRB certification as an Emergency Services Instructor. Equivalency: EMT certification with another jurisdiction that has reciprocity with Maryland, or National Registry EMT per Maryland Exec. Order No. 20‑03‑19‑03. Preferred Criteria – Interview Preferences Experience and/or degree in: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four‑year university (preferably in EMS, Fire Science, Education, or related field). MICRB Fire instructor. MICRB EMT instructor. MICRB Hazmat instructor. Additional technical and instructional skills: Two (2) years of experience as an MICRB instructor. Experience developing curriculum, lesson plans, and instructional materials for adult learners.
