Fleet Manager - South & Hill Country Divisions

Position Summary

The Fleet Manager is responsible for the overall management, reliability, maintenance, and readiness of the mobile equipment fleet for the Tex-Mix South and Hill Country Divisions. The primary objective of this position is to maximize equipment uptime by ensuring trucks, loaders, and other assigned equipment are properly maintained, repaired, inspected, and available to support daily operations.

The Fleet Manager has direct responsibility and authority over fleet maintenance personnel within the South and Hill Country Divisions, including hiring, termination, performance management, annual reviews, training, work assignments, and accountability.

This position will work closely with the Division General Managers, Plant Managers, Operations personnel, and fleet mechanics to identify equipment needs, establish repair priorities, determine the appropriate work to be performed, and ensure maintenance resources are used effectively.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Fleet Maintenance & Equipment Uptime

• Maintain primary responsibility for maximizing the availability and reliability of ready-mix trucks, loaders, and other assigned mobile equipment.
• Monitor fleet condition and identify equipment requiring maintenance, repair, or additional evaluation.
• Determine and prioritize maintenance and repair work based on safety, operational needs, equipment condition, cost, and potential downtime.
• Work with mechanics to diagnose equipment problems and determine the appropriate repair strategy.
• Ensure out-of-service equipment is evaluated promptly and returned to service as quickly as practical.
• Coordinate maintenance priorities with plant and operations management to minimize disruption to production and customer service.
• Identify recurring mechanical problems and develop corrective actions to reduce repeat failures.
• Evaluate when repairs should be completed internally versus outsourced to a dealer or outside repair facility.
• Monitor major repairs and ensure work is completed properly and in a timely manner.

Preventive Maintenance

• Develop, implement, and enforce an effective preventive maintenance program for trucks, loaders, and other assigned equipment.
• Ensure preventive maintenance is performed at appropriate intervals and properly documented.
• Monitor upcoming maintenance requirements and schedule work before equipment failures occur whenever possible.
• Hold mechanics accountable for identifying developing problems during inspections and preventive maintenance rather than simply responding to breakdowns.
• Continuously evaluate maintenance practices for opportunities to improve equipment reliability and extend equipment life.

Mechanic Management

• Directly supervise fleet mechanics assigned to the South and Hill Country Divisions.
• Recruit, interview, select, and hire qualified mechanics as needed.
• Make termination and disciplinary decisions when employee performance or conduct does not meet company expectations.
• Conduct annual performance reviews for mechanics.
• Establish clear expectations for productivity, quality of work, attendance, safety, responsiveness, and preventive maintenance.
• Assign and prioritize mechanic workloads across plants and locations.
• Evaluate mechanic staffing levels and recommend or implement staffing changes when necessary.
• Identify training and development needs and ensure mechanics have the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain the fleet.
• Develop mechanic capabilities so the maintenance department becomes increasingly proactive rather than reactive.
• Promote accountability for completing repairs correctly the first time and minimizing repeat repairs.

Operational Support

• Maintain regular communication with the Division General Managers regarding fleet condition, significant equipment issues, major repairs, staffing concerns, and potential operational risks.
• Work closely with Plant Managers and Operations personnel to understand daily and upcoming equipment requirements.
• Balance maintenance requirements with operational demands while maintaining appropriate safety and equipment standards.
• Help determine when equipment should remain in service, be scheduled for repair, or be removed from service.
• Respond appropriately to urgent breakdowns or equipment issues that could affect production or customer service.
• Assist in planning fleet availability for periods of high production demand.

Cost & Vendor Management

• Manage fleet maintenance with appropriate consideration for both equipment reliability and overall repair cost.
• Review significant repair expenditures and determine the most appropriate repair approach.
• Work with parts suppliers, dealerships, and outside repair vendors as necessary.
• Evaluate vendor performance, repair quality, turnaround time, and cost.
• Monitor parts usage and help ensure critical parts and supplies are available when needed.
• Identify excessive or recurring maintenance expenses and develop plans to address the underlying cause.
• Provide input regarding equipment replacement when continued repair is no longer economically or operationally justified.

Safety & Compliance

• Ensure fleet maintenance activities comply with company safety policies and applicable regulatory requirements.
• Ensure trucks and equipment are maintained in a safe operating condition.
• Address safety-related mechanical defects promptly.
• Maintain appropriate maintenance and inspection records.
• Promote safe work practices throughout all fleet maintenance operations.

Performance Expectations

Success in this position will be measured primarily by the Fleet Manager's ability to maintain a safe, reliable, and available fleet capable of supporting the operational needs of the South and Hill Country Divisions.

Qualifications

• Strong working knowledge of heavy-duty truck and/or heavy-equipment maintenance.
• Demonstrated ability to diagnose mechanical problems and make sound repair decisions.
• Previous experience supervising mechanics or maintenance personnel preferred.
• Strong leadership and personnel-management skills.
• Ability to prioritize multiple repairs and maintenance needs across multiple locations.
• Ability to balance equipment availability, repair cost, safety, and operational requirements.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively with mechanics, plant personnel, operations management, vendors, and senior leadership.
• Experience with ready-mix concrete trucks, diesel engines, hydraulic systems, loaders, and related heavy equipment is strongly preferred.

Other Duties

• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the South and Hill Country Division General Managers.
• Assist with operational, maintenance, equipment, or other company needs as necessary to support the South and Hill Country Divisions.
• Responsibilities may evolve based on the operational needs of the company.

Leadership Expectations

The Fleet Manager is expected to take ownership of fleet performance across both divisions. This position should not operate solely as a response to equipment failures. The expectation is to anticipate problems, establish priorities, hold maintenance personnel accountable, and continually improve fleet reliability.

The Fleet Manager should maintain a strong sense of urgency when equipment is unavailable while ensuring repairs are performed safely and correctly. The position requires someone who understands that reliable equipment is essential to the company's ability to serve customers, protect production schedules, and operate efficiently.
