Speech Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA)
The Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) supports the delivery of speech and language services for students with communication disorders under the supervision of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP). The SLPA implements treatment plans, provides direct student support, assists with screenings and documentation, prepares instructional materials, and helps create inclusive learning environments that support student communication, language development, and educational access. The SLPA works collaboratively with students, families, educators, and multidisciplinary teams to support student success across educational settings.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Provide direct speech and language intervention services to students under the supervision of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist in accordance with student IEPs, treatment plans, and Washington State regulations.
- Implement documented therapy plans and instructional activities designed to support articulation, language development, fluency, voice, social communication, and functional communication skills.
- Support students individually and in small group settings using evidence-based instructional and therapeutic strategies.
- Assist with speech and language screenings, observations, and data collection activities without interpretation of assessment results.
- Monitor and document student performance, progress toward goals, and participation during therapy sessions; maintain accurate service records and required documentation.
- Prepare, organize, adapt, and maintain therapy materials, visual supports, AAC devices, and instructional resources to support student communication needs.
- Support the implementation and use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems and assistive technology as directed by the supervising SLP.
- Collaborate with teachers, paraeducators, special education staff, and families to reinforce communication strategies across school environments.
- Assist with classroom carryover activities and support communication skill development in inclusive educational settings.
- Maintain confidentiality of student information and comply with FERPA, IDEA, district policies, and professional practice standards.
- Participate in staff meetings, trainings, IEP-related activities, and professional development as assigned.
- Support culturally responsive practices and maintain respectful relationships with students, families, tribal community members, and staff.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate degree from an accredited Speech-Language Pathology Assistant program or related approved program.
- Current Washington State Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) credential or eligibility to obtain prior to employment.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with children with varying communication, developmental, behavioral, and learning needs.
- Basic computer proficiency including word processing, email, electronic documentation systems, and data entry.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries in educational settings.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences, Communication Disorders, Education, or related field.
- Prior experience working as an SLPA in a school or pediatric setting.
- Experience supporting students with autism spectrum disorder, developmental disabilities, or complex communication needs.
- Experience using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems and assistive technology.
- Knowledge of Native American cultures, traditions, and communities, particularly the Puyallup Tribe and the students and families served by Chief Leschi Schools.
- Experience working in culturally responsive, inclusive, or trauma-informed educational environments.
Knowledge Of
- Principles, practices, and techniques used in speech-language pathology services within school settings.
- Child speech, language, and communication development.
- Speech and language disorders, articulation disorders, fluency disorders, voice disorders, and pragmatic language needs.
- Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems and assistive communication supports.
- Special education procedures, student accommodations, and IEP implementation.
- Data collection methods, documentation practices, and student progress monitoring.
- Behavior support strategies and positive student engagement techniques.
- Educational technology, standard office software, and electronic record systems.
- Cultural responsiveness and practices that support diverse student populations.
Ability To
- Effectively implement speech and language treatment plans under the supervision of a licensed SLP.
- Build positive, professional relationships with students, staff, families, and community members.
- Communicate clearly and professionally both verbally and in writing.
- Work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary educational team.
- Adapt communication methods and instructional strategies to meet individual student needs.
- Maintain accurate records and organize materials, schedules, and documentation efficiently.
- Support students in classroom, small group, and individual settings.
- Demonstrate patience, flexibility, professionalism, and sound judgment when working with students.
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with professional, ethical, and district standards.
- Work effectively with Native American students and families while honoring cultural values and traditions.
- Learn and apply district procedures, technology systems, and instructional practices.
Reporting Relationship: Building Administrator or designee
Physical Demands:
- Employees may be required to sit or stand for extended periods and perform tasks involving reaching, talking, hearing, bending, stooping, twisting, squatting, kneeling, and fine motor coordination.
- This position may require regularly lifting or moving up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds, with appropriate assistance or equipment as needed.
Work Environment:
Work is primarily performed in an indoor educational environment with moderate noise levels. Employees may work in and/or proximity to classrooms, students, and standard office or instructional equipment. Conditions may vary based on program needs.
