PICU Travel Nursing Job Details

• Specialty: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Registered Nurse (RN)

• Work Setting: On-site, high-acuity pediatric critical care unit
• Weekly Estimated Pay: $2,200–$2,320
• Start Date: November 17, 2026
• Contract Duration: 13 weeks
• Schedule: 3 shifts per week, 36 hours per week
• Shift Duration: 12-hour rotating shifts
• Shift Options: Day shifts, approximately 7:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m.; night shifts, approximately 7:00 p.m.–7:30 a.m.
• Patient Ratio: Approximately 1 nurse to 2 patients
• Unit Profile: Approximately 20 beds with an average daily census of 18 patients
• Weekend Requirement: Minimum of 5 weekend shifts during the contract
• Floating: Travelers may be asked to float to another appropriate unit or nearby facility based on qualifications and staffing needs

PICU Registered Nurse Job Requirements

• Minimum of 2 years of recent PICU nursing experience in a high-acuity, tertiary-level, or teaching hospital
• Experience caring for critically ill pediatric patients in a PICU with at least 15 beds strongly preferred
• Current California Registered Nurse (RN) license in hand
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
• Epic electronic health record (EHR) charting experience required
• Proficiency with ventilator management, high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV), CPAP/BiPAP, telemetry, central line care, continuous sedation, procedural sedation monitoring, and intracranial pressure monitoring
• Experience with arterial lines, external ventricular drain (EVD) management, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), high-flow nasal cannula, tracheostomy care, chest tubes, dysrhythmia management, and pediatric dosage calculations
• CCRN certification and Level I or Level II trauma experience preferred
• Experience with bone marrow transplant patients preferred
• Two professional references from a recent employer required during the application process
• All requested time off must be disclosed during submission and approved before the assignment begins; time off is not permitted during the first two weeks of the contract

Pediatric Critical Care Nursing Responsibilities

• Deliver comprehensive, evidence-based nursing care to critically ill neonates through adolescents with complex medical and surgical conditions
• Monitor and manage patients receiving mechanical ventilation, HFOV, CPAP/BiPAP, ECLS, CRRT, and other advanced life-support therapies
• Assess and manage patients with elevated intracranial pressure, EVDs, hydrocephalus, neurological conditions, pulmonary hypertension, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia
• Provide central and arterial line care, CVP and hemodynamic monitoring, blood product administration, and continuous infusion management
• Administer and monitor high-risk medications, including vasopressors, antiarrhythmics, anticonvulsants, insulin, and continuous sedatives
• Assist with intubation, lumbar puncture, airway management, chest tube care, and other pediatric critical care procedures
• Recognize changes in patient condition and promptly communicate findings to providers and the interdisciplinary care team
• Accurately document assessments, interventions, and patient responses in Epic
• Support patients receiving post-operative, transplant-related, palliative, and complex medical-surgical care
• Collaborate with respiratory therapy, pharmacy, radiology, rapid response, rehabilitation, social services, and other support teams
• Maintain a safe, respectful, family-centered environment while educating patients' families and supporting shared care decisions
