The Opportunity

We’re hiring a Director of Preconstruction to lead and scale the preconstruction function within a growing specialty contractor focused on low voltage, structured cabling, and data center infrastructure.

This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who has personally built estimates in structured cabling environments and led teams of estimators within a subcontractor model . You’ll inherit a team of ~10 estimators and be responsible for elevating consistency, discipline, and output across the department.

You’ll report directly to the VP of Operations and serve as the senior leader for all preconstruction efforts.

What You Will Own

Team Leadership

• Lead and develop a team of ~10 estimators across multiple verticals:
• Mission critical / data centers
• Healthcare
• Aviation
• Commercial
• Direct management of estimating leads and oversight of team performance
• Build a scalable leadership structure that drives accountability and consistency
• Coach and mentor estimators with a focus on technical accuracy and production efficiency

Estimating & Preconstruction Oversight

• Final review and approval of all estimates prior to submission
• Establish and enforce best practices for:
• Structured cabling estimating methodologies
• Scope development and coverage
• Exclusions and clarifications
• Partner with BD and Operations on bid/no-bid decisions and pursuit strategy
• Ensure accuracy, competitiveness, and consistency across all bids

Process & Standards

• Build and implement standardized processes across all estimating functions:
• Scope templates by vertical
• Estimating workflows and quality control measures
• Markup and pricing consistency
• Drive adoption and optimization of Procore Estimating and BuildingConnected
• Establish reporting frameworks including:
• Bid logs
• Win/loss tracking
• Pipeline visibility

Platform Ownership

• Own BuildingConnected strategy:
• Bid evaluation and prioritization
• GC engagement and prequalification participation
• Ensure Procore Estimating is used consistently as the team’s system of record

Executive & BD Alignment

• Serve as the preconstruction partner to Business Development
• Align estimating strategy with market opportunities and GC relationships
• Present in client interviews and support major pursuits

What You Bring

Required Experience (Non-Negotiable)

• 8+ years of hands-on estimating experience within a low voltage / structured cabling contractor
• Demonstrated experience personally building estimates for structured cabling and/or data center infrastructure projects
• 3+ years leading and managing estimating teams (direct oversight of estimators required)
• Background working for a subcontractor (NOT GC or owner-side) in a preconstruction/estimating capacity

Preferred

• Mission critical / data center project experience
• RCDD or strong familiarity with BICSI / TIA standards
• Experience in healthcare or aviation environments
• Proficiency with BuildingConnected and Procore Estimating

Leadership Profile

• Proven ability to build or transform estimating functions and teams
• Leads with structure, accountability, and clarity
• Strong technical depth in structured cabling and infrastructure projects
• Comfortable operating at both strategic and tactical levels
• Credible in front of GCs, clients, and executive leadership

This Role Is Not For You If

• Your experience is primarily with a GC or owner-side organization
• You have not personally estimated structured cabling projects
• You have not directly managed estimators
• You prefer individual contributor estimating over building and leading teams
