Respiratory Technician

The Respiratory Technician administers diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to facilitate the patient's breathing. He/she evaluates the respiratory care for appropriateness and effectiveness and communicates findings/results to other healthcare professionals.

Responsibilities and duties include preparing for patient treatment, receiving orders from physicians for treatment, reviewing requests to determine requirements for treatments, prioritizing work assignments, gathering necessary materials and equipment, transporting to patient's bedside, preparing medications, explaining treatment and breathing procedures to patient, following protocols, administering all respiratory care provided by department, observing patient during treatments, performing auscultation, checking pulse, and respiratory rate, notifying medical or nursing personnel of any adverse reactions, recording pertinent data on patient charts, carrying out interventions appropriate to patient age, sex, physical and developmental needs, assisting with trauma, bronchoscopies, and critical care transports, providing neonatal respiratory care, performing invasive procedures such as suctioning and arterial blood gas sampling/analysis to ensure proper airway function and to provide relevant diagnostic data, performing evaluation, performing patient assessments and assigning appropriate care plans, reevaluating patients as scheduled, discussing care plans with physicians, maintaining assortment of equipment to assure proper function, troubleshooting equipment problems and performing quality controls. As a High Reliability Organization (HRO), responsibilities require focus on safety, quality and efficiency in performing job duties. Minimum qualifications include a high school or GED, BLS - Basic Life Support - American Heart Association, enrolled in an accredited respiratory care program, Ohio limited permit or Ohio license, and BLS certification.

Work shift is variable and scheduled weekly hours are as needed. Department is pulmonary services.
